Yat Siu spent his childhood in Vienna learning this principle. His mother conducted orchestras. His father played instruments. Surrounded by the world of European classical music, SIU learned early on that a Stradivarius violin from 1700 isn’t valued because it sounds better than modern instruments, but because you can trace every hand that has held it.

Decades later, Siu applied this same principle to the internet. Not with music, but with code. He sought to build a world where digital objects could have provenance, where ownership could be verified, and where the original could be distinguished from the copy.

Siu is the co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, a Hong Kong-based company valued at $5 billion with stakes in over 600 Web3 projects. His portfolio includes OpenSea, Axie Infinity, Yuga Labs, and The Sandbox. When he talks about the future of digital ownership, institutions listen.

But his conviction didn’t come from watching charts or tracking money flows. It came from understanding what happens when you can prove something is truly yours.

Born in Vienna in 1973 to those immigrant musicians, Siu studied at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, training in cello, flute, and piano.

But his music training left a lasting mark. Classical music operates on a principle that the tech world had forgotten: the importance of the original. You can have a thousand recordings of a Beethoven symphony, but there’s only one original manuscript.

When Siu discovered blockchain decades later, he recognised something others missed. Digital ownership wasn’t about speculation. It was about bringing that same principle of provenance, verifiability, and authenticity to a world where copies were infinite and originals didn’t exist.

Siu’s first encounter with computers came through music. He wrote MIDI software on Atari machines in the 1980s. In 1990, Atari Germany hired him through CompuServe without knowing how old he was. He was 13.

“When I showed up at the office in Vienna, which was just a one-man operation, they were surprised,” Siu told the Australian Financial Review. “I was this Asian kid, but I still got the opportunity. The only thing that mattered was who I was virtually and online.”

By 1996, Siu had relocated to Hong Kong. He founded Hong Kong Cybercity, later renamed Freenation, which was Asia’s first free web page and email provider. Millions signed up.

In 1998, Siu co-founded Outblaze with Antony Yip, creating a white-label communication platform. Outblaze survived the dot-com crash. By 2009, it had scaled to 75 million users. That year, Siu sold the messaging division to IBM’s Lotus Software, funding Asia’s first IBM cloud lab.

In 2014, Siu co-founded Animoca Brands as a mobile gaming studio. The company made games like Crazy Kings and Crazy Defense Heroes. In January 2015, Animoca went public on the Australian Securities Exchange, raising A$2.4 million.

Then in 2017, everything changed.

Dapper Labs, a Vancouver-based company Siu had invested in, released CryptoKitties, which is a game where players bred and collected digital cats on the Ethereum blockchain. Each cat was an NFT, (non-fungible token), meaning it was unique and verifiably owned.

The game exploded and people spent thousands of dollars on cartoon cats.

Siu saw past the absurdity. In 2018, Siu pivoted Animoca entirely into blockchain. The company acquired The Sandbox and began accumulating a portfolio of Web3 investments. By 2019, Animoca held stakes in Axie Infinity, OpenSea, Dapper Labs, and dozens of other blockchain projects.

The Australian Securities Exchange raised concerns about how Animoca valued its virtual assets. They didn’t understand NFTs.

Siu made a choice. On March 9, 2020, Animoca voluntarily delisted from the ASX. The company explained the move was necessary “to focus on building the business in an environment that is more welcoming to activities that involve virtual asset ownership through blockchain and non-fungible tokens.”

Operating as an unlisted entity gave Siu regulatory freedom. By January 2022, Animoca Brands was valued at $5 billion.

Siu frequently draws a parallel between countries and virtual worlds. Nations with strong property rights — the United States, Canada — have high GDPs and entrepreneurial activity. “Freedom and property rights are inseparable,” he says, referencing George Washington.

In Web2, platforms own everything. Facebook owns your photos. Spotify owns your playlists. Fortnite owns your skins. If the company shuts down or changes the rules, your assets vanish.

But with NFTs, ownership is verifiable and portable. You can prove something is yours, sell it, or move it to another platform.

Siu uses numbers to make his case. In a single year, NFTs generated over $24 billion in sales, with most of that value flowing directly to creators. In the same period, Spotify paid creators about one-third of that amount.

When asked if NFTs are dead, Siu reframed the question. “Currently, monthly NFT trading is at 300 to 400 million dollars,” he told Trending Topics. “So it is a market. I see it more as digital skins or objects, where in the future people won’t say ‘That’s an NFT’ anymore. Just like people don’t say ‘MP3’ anymore, but simply ‘music.’ Good technology disappears into the background.”

To Siu, the crash of NFTs only proves his point: NFTs are infrastructure, not speculation. The technology becomes invisible when it works.

But Bitcoin maximalists argue that altcoins are distractions. To them, only Bitcoin matters.

Siu disagrees. “Bitcoin is like digital gold,” he says. “Innovation comes from altcoins, all new products emerge there. Nobody builds on Bitcoin.”

Animoca now holds stakes in over 600 blockchain projects — 230 of them in gaming and entertainment alone. “We’re probably the best altcoin index as a private company,” Siu said. “Our thesis: Altcoins will collectively become larger than Bitcoin.”

The crypto winter of 2022 tested that thesis. When FTX collapsed and Bitcoin plunged, many Web3 companies retreated.

Siu stayed in. While competitors pulled back from blockchain investments, Animoca doubled down on its Web3 portfolio and continued launching token advisory services for struggling projects.

The conviction paid off. While many developers struggled in 2022, Animoca recorded bookings of $573 million. After a dip in 2023 following the FTX collapse, the company’s annual bookings grew by over 12 percent in 2024. Total assets increased by 43 percent.

By the end of 2024, Animoca’s balance sheet held approximately $300 million in cash and stablecoins, over $500 million in digital assets, and more than $560 million in minority investments, bringing its total assets to: $4.3 billion.

Much of the growth came from a new business model. Rather than just writing checks during funding rounds, Animoca offered consulting and token launch services to Web3 projects. In exchange, the company received tokens at early valuations, often between $10 million and $20 million before they hit public markets. By 2024, this digital asset advisory division generated $165 million, more than double the previous year.

In 2025, Siu began preparing Animoca for a return to public markets through a Nasdaq listing in 2026, executed via a reverse merger with Currenc Group. Under the deal, Animoca shareholders would hold approximately 95 percent of the combined entity.

“We’re going public now following the motto ‘The early bird catches the worm,’” Siu says. “Next year, at least a dozen companies from our portfolio will go public.”

The timing is deliberate. Institutional investors want exposure to Web3 but they can’t easily buy altcoins. A publicly traded company holding those assets solves the problem.

Beyond going public, Siu is expanding Animoca’s influence. In August 2025, the company formed a joint venture with Standard Chartered bank and Hong Kong Telecom to issue licensed stablecoins. That same month, Animoca partnered with Provenance Blockchain Labs to develop NUVA, a vault marketplace for real-world assets.

In July 2023, the Hong Kong government appointed him to the Task Force on Promoting Web3 Development, giving him direct influence over how one of Asia’s major financial hubs regulates blockchain technology.

The market could crash again. Regulations could tighten. But Siu’s still trying to change the conversation about what ownership means online.

There’s a reason Siu talks about classical music when explaining blockchain. Both are about authenticity. About provenance. About proving that something came from a specific source at a specific moment.

In classical music, the Urtext matters because it preserves the composer’s original intent. Every note has weight. You don’t own the performance. You own the manuscript.

The internet Siu is building works the same way. You don’t just consume content. You own pieces of it. The tokens in your wallet are proof that you were there, that you participated, that something belongs to you in a way that can’t be erased.

It’s a different kind of internet. Not one where you rent access from platforms that can take it away. But one where ownership is verifiable, portable, permanent.

Just like an original manuscript. Just like an Urtext.

The technology will disappear into the background. But the principle remains.

After that, anyone could do it.

Thirty-two years later, that same person is advising the U.S. government on which regulatory agencies to dismantle. The agencies in question happen to oversee some of the companies he’s invested $7.6 billion in.

This is not a coincidence.

Marc Andreessen’s career reads like a case study of what happens when someone figures out the future early and then spends decades making sure nothing stands in their way. He’s created the first mainstream web browser, taken a company public at 24, survived a startup that nearly bankrupted him, reinvented how venture capital works, and bet bigger on crypto than almost any institutional investor on Earth.

He’s also blocked critics on Twitter, fought against affordable housing near his mansion, compared India’s rejection of Facebook to economic catastrophe, and positioned himself as the intellectual architect of a movement to gut the regulatory state.

Understanding Andreessen means sitting with contradictions that don’t resolve cleanly. The same brain that made the internet accessible to non-technical users now publishes 5,000-word manifestos about why technology should be accelerated beyond all limits. The man who got crushed by Microsoft’s monopoly tactics is now helping design policies that could make it easier for new monopolies to form.

This is a story about leverage. How you get it, how you use it, and what happens when someone who’s already reshaped how we use computers decides the next thing to reshape is how we govern them.

In August 2022, someone leaked a piece of correspondence that Marc Andreessen and his wife had sent to the mayor of Atherton, California. Atherton is the wealthiest zip code in America, with the median home selling for over $7 million. Marc Andreessen lives there.

The letter concerned a proposal to rezone a single property for multifamily housing. Andreessen wanted the proposal “IMMEDIATELY REMOVED.” The development would “MASSIVELY decrease the values of our homes,” create “IMMENSE” noise pollution, and dramatically increase traffic.

The capitalisation was his, not mine.

Two years earlier, Andreessen had published an essay called “It’s Time to Build,” that went viral during the COVID lockdowns. In it, he argued that America had lost its will to construct housing, infrastructure, and factories. Regulatory paralysis and cultural complacency were killing us and we needed to build our way out.

The Atherton letter became exhibit A in the case that Silicon Valley’s “build” rhetoric has limits. Specifically, the limits of their own property lines.

But dismissing Andreessen as just another hypocritical billionaire misses something important. Because whatever his personal contradictions, he’s been right about technology’s trajectory more consistently than almost anyone else over the past three decades. And right now, he’s betting that the next phase requires removing the referees entirely.

Whether that’s visionary or reckless is the question. Let’s start at the beginning.

Andreessen’s origin story is genuinely impressive. A small-town Wisconsin kid, teaching himself BASIC on a TRS-80 from the library, ends up at the University of Illinois working at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. In 1993, at 22, he created Mosaic, the first web browser that didn’t require a PhD to operate. Sometimes simplifying solves a lot of problems. The innovation was simpleimages displayed inline with text. It changed everything. Suddenly, the web looked like a magazine instead of a Unix terminal.

Within a year, 2 million people had downloaded it. The internet went from a niche, exclusive club for computer nerds to cultural phenomenon overnight. Jim Clark, the founder of Silicon Graphics, saw what was happening and recruited Andreessen to California. They founded Netscape in 1994. By August 1995, Netscape’s IPO made Andreessen worth $58 million at age 24. The stock opened at $71, more than double its offering price, despite the company having exactly zero profits.

A successful IPO was also the starting gun for the dot-com bubble. Every founder with a pitch deck and a dream suddenly had a blueprint, which is to get big fast, go public, and worry about profits later. Andreessen became the face of this new economy. Time magazine put him on the cover, barefoot and sitting on a throne like a digital emperor. He famously predicted that Netscape would reduce Windows to a “poorly debugged set of device drivers,” which was less a technical forecast and more a declaration of war.

The lesson was about power. Microsoft crushed Netscape by controlling the platform. If you don’t control the platform, someone else controls your oxygen supply.

What happened next is important because it doesn’t fit the typical Silicon Valley narrative. In 1999, Andreessen and Ben Horowitz founded Loudcloud, essentially building Amazon Web Services before AWS even existed. Brilliant idea. Catastrophic timing. They launched just as the dot-com bubble was imploding. Their customers, mostly startups burning venture capital, went bankrupt en masse. Loudcloud’s stock crashed from $6 to $0.35.

This is where Andreessen’s narrative gets interesting.

Most Silicon Valley origin stories are smooth arcs from garage to IPO to billions. Andreessen’s includes a near-death experience, when Loudcloud burned through its cash in the dot‑com crash, laid off hundreds of employees, and came within inches of bankruptcy before pivoting into Opsware.

They renamed it Opsware. It was brutal. It took years. But in 2007, HP bought Opsware for $1.6 billion.

That crucible matters because it distinguishes Andreessen from the “fair-weather” founders who only know what it’s like when everything is on an upward trajectory. He knows what it’s like when the money runs out and the phone stops ringing. He’s operated a sinking ship in a hurricane. That experience hardened him, and gave him credibility as an operator, not just a visionary.

The Venture Capital Machine

In 2009, amidst the wreckage of the financial crisis, Andreessen and Horowitz launched their venture capital firm with $300 million. The timing was perfect. Valuations were depressed. Competitors were pulling back, and Andreessen had a thesis about how venture capital was broken.

Traditional VC firms were small partnerships. A few general partners, maybe some associates, portfolio companies got capital and a board seat, but not much else. Andreessen Horowitz built something different: the “Agency Model,” inspired by Hollywood talent agencies. They hired hundreds of people across various functions like recruiting, PR, business development, legal, and regulatory affairs. Portfolio companies didn’t just get money; they got a full-service support apparatus.

This model forced the entire industry to professionalise. Suddenly, every VC firm had to offer operational support or risk losing deals. Andreessen also understood media in a way most VCs didn’t. He and Horowitz blogged, tweeted, appeared on podcasts,and controlled their own narrative instead of relying on tech journalists. They positioned themselves as “founder-friendly,” promising they’d never replace a founder-CEO (a common fear after Steve Jobs was ousted from Apple).

The results were spectacular. They invested in Facebook, Twitter, Airbnb, GitHub, Pinterest, Slack, and Lyft. Their funds generated returns that made them legends. By some estimates, their internal rate of return hit 50%, making them one of the most successful VC firms in history. Andreessen published “Why Software Is Eating the World” in 2011, a manifesto arguing that software companies would devour every industry, from retail to defense to agriculture. That thesis justified the massive valuations of the 2010s Unicorn boom. It became accepted wisdom.

The Crypto Godfather

In 2013, Andreessen began investing in Bitcoin and the broader crypto ecosystem. At the time, this was genuinely contrarian. Most serious institutional investors viewed crypto as a scam, a Ponzi scheme, or digital tulips. Andreessen compared the skepticism to what he’d faced with the internet in 1993. He saw a pattern: new technology, dismissed by incumbents, poised to disrupt everything.

Andreessen Horowitz became the first blue-chip VC firm to launch dedicated crypto funds, eventually raising over $7.6 billion across multiple vehicles. They invested in Coinbase, Solana, Uniswap, OpenSea, basically the entire infrastructure layer of crypto. Andreessen’s involvement lent crucial legitimacy to the sector. When banks were debanking crypto startups and regulators threatened bans, his presence signaled to other institutions that this was real, not criminal.

The firm developed the “progressive decentralisation” playbook: start centralised to iterate quickly, then gradually hand control to token holders. This was designed to navigate SEC regulations, trying to prove tokens weren’t securities because the networks were “sufficiently decentralised.” It was regulatory arbitrage wrapped in revolutionary rhetoric.

In late 2021, Twitter founder and Bitcoin maximalist Jack Dorsey launched a public attack on the Web3 narrative. His tweet became infamous: “You don’t own ‘web3.’ The VCs and their LPs do. It will never escape their incentives. It’s ultimately a centralised entity with a different label.”

Dorsey’s argument was that Andreessen Horowitz was engaging in the very kind of centralisation they claimed to oppose. By owning massive stakes in “decentralised” protocols and using those tokens to vote in governance, they were effectively the central bank of the new internet. They were extracting rents from users, just like Web2 platforms, but masking it with liberation rhetoric.

Andreessen blocked Dorsey on Twitter. Dorsey responded with a screenshot, mocking the VC’s inability to handle dissent. The “block” became a meme, a symbol of the rift between Bitcoiners (who value immutability and zero VC influence) and Web3 VCs (who value experimentation and token-based business models).

Critics started digging into the mechanics. The allegation was that Andreessen Horowitz would invest in a protocol at the seed stage for pennies per token, hype it through their massive media machine, watch it list on Coinbase (also an a16z portfolio company) at inflated prices, and then sell to retail investors as vesting schedules unlocked. The VCs would realize 1000x returns while retail held the bag when prices crashed. Legal? Yes. But fundamentally contradicting the egalitarian ethos of crypto.

The Political Radicalisation

In October 2023, Andreesen published “The Techno-Optimist Manifesto,” a 5,000-word document that felt less like a business thesis and more like a political declaration.

The manifesto identified a “coalition of the demoralised” including tech ethicists, trust and safety teams, ESG investors, and regulators, as enemies of civilisation. He argued that technology was the only source of growth and abundance, and that any restriction on it was a restriction on human life itself. He embraced “Effective Accelerationism” (e/acc), advocating for accelerating AI and capitalism to their absolute limits to overcome scarcity.

Critics noted disturbing parallels to early 20th-century Italian Futurism, which celebrated speed, violence, and war as societal hygiene. The manifesto felt less like optimism and more like techno-feudalism. A world run by engineer-kings, unaccountable to democratic oversight, with the rest of humanity as passive consumers of their abundance.

By 2024, Andreessen’s alienation from the Democratic Party was complete. He felt the Biden administration, particularly SEC Chair Gary Gensler and FTC Chair Lina Khan, was waging war on tech through aggressive regulation and “Operation Choke Point 2.0” (debanking crypto companies). He formally endorsed Donald Trump, articulating the “Little Tech Agenda.”the thesis that Big Tech loves regulation because they can afford compliance costs, which act as moats against startups. Little Tech (crypto, AI startups) dies under regulation.

Following Trump’s victory, Andreessen became deeply involved with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory commission led by Elon Musk. Although he called himself an “unpaid intern,” reports indicated he was a key architect of its strategy. The commission’s goal was to slash federal spending and dismantle the “administrative state.” Andreessen specifically targeted agencies that had investigated his portfolio companies- the CFPB (which had probed fintechs like Greenlight) and the SEC (which had sued Coinbase).

This is regulatory capture at its most naked: a billionaire VC advising the government to destroy the regulators overseeing his investments. The DOGE initiative aimed to cut agency workforces, ostensibly for efficiency, but functionally removing oversight of the industries Andreessen profits from. But despite the hype and brutal cuts, DOGE has fallen far short of its own promises: court rulings and political backlash stalled many of its biggest layoffs, Musk quietly exited, and the White House has now confirmed the department has been disbanded with most of its projected ‘trillions in savings’ unrealised.

The Contradictions

Here’s what I keep coming back to: Marc Andreessen is extraordinarily good at identifying where the world is going and positioning himself to profit from it. He visualised the web with Mosaic. He commercialised it with Netscape. He industrialised venture capital with a16z. He legitimised crypto for institutions. He’s now trying to deregulate everything so his portfolio companies can operate without friction.

But his blind spots are massive. His “techno-optimism” often resembles “techno-solipsism,” a belief that technology solves all problems while ignoring displacement, inequality, and community rights. He champions decentralisation while consolidating power in mega-firms. He preaches building but obstructs it when it inconveniences him personally.

For example, Andreessen’s firm a16z voted ‘no’ on the Uniswap fee switch, a proposal that would have given more control and revenue to token holders, illustrating how his ‘techno-optimism’ aligns with consolidating power in mega-firms rather than empowering decentralisation.

The Free Basics controversy in India in 2016 is revealing. Facebook tried to launch a service providing free access to a limited “walled garden” of the internet for India’s rural poor. India’s telecom regulator banned it, citing net neutrality violations. Andreessen exploded on Twitter: “Anti-colonialism has been economically catastrophic for the Indian people for decades. Why stop now?”

The implication was that India’s sovereign decision to reject a Western corporation was backward, rooted in irrational resentment. Silicon Valley knew what was best for the developing world better than the people themselves. Mark Zuckerberg publicly rebuked him. Andreessen apologised and deleted the tweet. But the mask had slipped.

Marc Andreessen is the avatar of a specific worldview that the world would be better if it were run like a software company, with engineers making decisions based on efficiency rather than messy democratic processes. He’s convinced that technology is the solution to every problem, that regulation is always captured, and that the best thing the government can do is get out of the way.

And maybe he’s right about some of it. Regulation can be captured. Government can be sclerotic. Technology has solved genuine problems and created real abundance. But the flip side is also true. Unregulated markets create monopolies. Technology displaces workers. Abundance for some often means precarity for others.

Andreessen’s current project, essentially trying to dismantle the administrative state so his crypto and AI investments can flourish without oversight, is the logical endpoint of his philosophy. Now he’s trying to rebuild the regulatory architecture of the United States to favor his portfolio.

Whether you think that’s visionary or terrifying probably depends on whether you believe the people building the future should also be the ones deciding the rules. Andreessen clearly believes they should. He’s betting billions on it. And right now, with his guys in power and the regulators on the defensive, that bet is paying off.

What happens when the thing he’s building breaks? Because things always break. The dot-com bubble burst. Netscape got crushed. Loudcloud nearly died. The crypto markets crashed. And when the next crash comes, when the thing that looked like inevitable progress turns out to be another cycle, will the people who got hurt by the lack of guardrails remember that Marc Andreessen spent years trying to remove them?

I don’t know. But I do know this. The man who got famous for making the internet easy to use has spent the last decade pushing the boundaries of innovation and regulation. His approach to complexity reflects a deep understanding of the evolving digital landscape, crafting systems that challenge traditional frameworks and encourage new forms of accountability and transparency. What some see as obfuscation, others might view as pioneering strategies to navigate and shape the future of technology and governance.

He’s envisioning a future where builders have the freedom to innovate without unnecessary barriers. For those in the building seat, this means unprecedented opportunity to create and shape the world. And while experiments inevitably face challenges, such trials drive progress and learning. Marc Andreessen’s strength is in weathering those storms and coming out stronger, continuing to lead innovation no matter what happens.

He was a computer science student at the University of Bristol, working at Tesco to pay rent, and the general situation was... not great. The basic arithmetic of being a working-class kid at university is that you need money to live, but you also need time to study, and there are only 24 hours in a day. So he took his $200 and bought bitcoin.

This was the correct decision, obviously, but not in the way you think.

If Fish had simply held that bitcoin and never touched it, never traded it, never done anything interesting or stupid with it, he would have around $300,000 today. That is a genuinely life-changing amount of money for someone who started with $200. But it is not “crypto influencer who everyone assumes is a billionaire” money. It is not even “guy who sold a podcast NFT for $25 million” money.

The weird thing about Fish’s story is what happened between the $200 and the exit. Because the story that crypto wants to tell about itself is that you buy the magic internet money, you hold the magic internet money, the number goes up, and you become a billionaire. Fish’s actual story is more like: you buy the magic internet money, you try to make your own magic internet money, and it fails, you get a normal job, you come back to crypto, you build things, you expose fraud, you start a podcast, you pause the podcast after your sponsor implodes, you start a fundraising platform, and then Coinbase buys it for $375 million.

That is a much weirder story, and it suggests some uncomfortable things about how wealth actually gets created in crypto.

In 2014, Fish did what any 20-something crypto enthusiast would do when they had a little bit of bitcoin and a lot of conviction: he tried to build a better Bitcoin. This was the era when everyone was building a better Bitcoin. The pitch for Maxcoin was that it would be faster than Bitcoin and use a different hashing algorithm (Keccak instead of SHA-256), which somehow mattered to people at the time.

Fish partnered with Max Keiser, a financial broadcaster who is now the Bitcoin advisor to the President of El Salvador, which gives you a sense of both how seriously people took this and how little any of it mattered. Maxcoin launched with genuine enthusiasm. It was one of the first “celebrity coins,” which is funny because it predates the entire concept of a memecoin by about seven years.

And then it died.

When the 2015 bear market hit, Maxcoin’s price collapsed. The project disappeared. If you were trying to find evidence that Maxcoin ever existed, you would have to do actual research, because the market has completely forgotten about it.

But Fish didn’t forget about it. What he learned from Maxcoin’s failure was that crypto is not actually about technology. It is about memes, narratives, and community. You can build a technically superior product and it doesn’t matter if no one cares.

This is the kind of lesson that costs most people their entire portfolio. Fish somehow managed to extract it from a failed project and then spend the next decade proving it was true.

Making Money By Not Trying to Make Money

After Maxcoin, Fish did the sensible thing and got a normal job. He worked at various tech startups, including Monzo, which became one of the UK’s biggest fintech companies. He was doing product management, which is what you do when you understand how to build software products but don’t want to actually write code anymore.

And then, around 2020, he came back to crypto.

Not quietly, not tentatively, but right at the moment when DeFi was about to eat the world and everyone who had stayed through the previous bear market was about to look like a genius.

DeFi was exploding. NFTs were about to explode. Every narrative was converging at once. Fish became an early supporter of Lido Finance, a liquid staking protocol which is now the second largest DeFi protocol by total value locked. He wasn’t just an investor or an advisor; he was the guy who understood that Ethereum’s transition to proof-of-stake would create massive demand for liquid staking solutions.

In October 2020, Fish and another crypto analyst named Ledger launched a podcast called UpOnly. The format was to bring on the most influential people in crypto and have long, unscripted conversations about whatever was happening. They interviewed Vitalik Buterin. They interviewed Sam Bankman-Fried (before he went to prison). They interviewed basically everyone who mattered.

UpOnly became essential listening, which created a strange dynamic. Fish was now simultaneously a market commentator, a protocol advisor, an investor, and a media personality. When projects got mentioned on UpOnly, their prices moved. This is the kind of influence that normally requires an investment bank and a Material Non-Public Information (MNPI) disclosure policy.

He kept most of his money in bitcoin and Ether, took tiny positions in altcoins (under 1% of his portfolio), almost never used leverage, and treated everything as zero until proven otherwise. He says:

“I use leverage close to never and typically to reduce risk rather than to add risk, which I bet many people just don’t quite grasp. I have used it to add risk maybe three times in the last 5 years, maybe 15 times ever, and I never go all in on anything. I have only ever done that on bitcoin and Ethereum before in the last decade. When I buy other things, I limit my risk to tiny amounts because I treat it as zero until proving otherwise. So always under 1% of the liquid portfolio. The liquid portfolio is also a smaller percentage of the overall portfolio to future proof against my own mistakes.”

This is the opposite of what crypto influencers tell you to do. The standard crypto influencer advice is to use 5x leverage on a memecoin you heard about from an anonymous account, hold until you hit a 100x, and then buy a Lamborghini.

Fish’s approach worked, obviously, but it worked in a way that suggests the entire narrative of crypto wealth creation might be wrong.

The Watchdog Problem

In 2022, Fish did something that probably cost him money but earned him a different kind of reputation. He published blockchain data showing suspicious trading activity connected to Coinbase employees. Specifically, someone appeared to be buying tokens right before Coinbase announced it would list them, which is textbook insider trading.

The SEC investigated. The DOJ prosecuted. A former Coinbase product manager named Ishan Wahi went to prison for two years.

This is the kind of thing that makes you a hero in the crypto community, but probably unemployable at most crypto companies. If you are a major exchange considering listing a new token, do you really want the guy who exposed insider trading at your competitor advising the project? It creates complications.

But Fish kept doing it. He kept calling out scams, kept questioning narratives, and kept being the person who said uncomfortable things in public.

In November 2022, FTX collapsed, and Fish had a problem. Actually, he had several problems.

The first problem was that UpOnly had taken sponsorship money from FTX. This was not a secret. Sam Bankman-Fried had appeared on the podcast. The FTX logo was on the show. When you watched old episodes, there it was, a monument to what seemed at the time like a legitimate exchange, but now looked like evidence of catastrophically bad judgment.

The second problem was that Fish had money on FTX when it collapsed. He said this publicly, which most people in his position would not have done. The standard move when you lose money in a spectacular fraud is to quietly absorb the loss and never mention it again. Fish mentioned it. He had funds on the exchange. Those funds were now gone.

The third problem was philosophical. Fish had spent years building a reputation as someone who could spot scams, call out bad actors, and generally serve as a voice of reason in an industry that frequently resembled a casino crossed with a Ponzi scheme. And yet, he had taken money from FTX and interviewed its founder, and apparently believed, like everyone else, that it was a real business.

How do you come back from that?

The answer turned out to be: you don’t, at least not right away. Fish and Ledger paused UpOnly. No announcement, no dramatic final episode, just silence. For nearly a year, one of crypto’s most visible personalities essentially disappeared. No podcast, minimal tweets, and no public appearances at conferences.

This was probably the correct decision, though it was definitely not the profitable one. The standard influencer playbook after a crisis is to come back immediately, apologise vaguely, promise to do better, and then continue doing exactly what you were doing before. The audience has a short memory. Sponsors want reach, not integrity. You can survive almost anything if you just keep posting.

When he came back, he came back with Echo.

The Exit That Makes No Sense

Echo launched in 2023 with the premise of letting normal people invest in early-stage crypto projects alongside venture capitalists. This was addressing a real problem. In crypto, there is a massive gap between what retail investors pay for tokens and what VCs pay. A VC might get into a project at a $10 million valuation. By the time retail can buy the token on an exchange, the valuation is $1 billion. The VC has already made a 100x. Retail is buying at the top.

Echo tried to close that gap by pooling retail capital and investing it in private rounds at VC terms. The platform facilitated over 300 deals and helped crypto projects raise roughly $200 million. This is not a trivial amount of money, but it is also not the kind of scale that normally commands a $375 million acquisition price.

And yet, in October 2025, Coinbase bought Echo for approximately $375 million.

The deal included another $25 million for the UpOnly NFT. This is a non-fungible token that, when burned, contractually obligates Fish and Ledger to produce eight new episodes. Think of it like exercising an option, except the underlying asset is two guys recording a podcast. Coinbase paid $25 million for what is essentially a very expensive mechanism to compel content creation.

This might be the first time in history that burning an NFT creates a legal obligation rather than destroying value.

But the Echo acquisition itself makes a kind of sense if you follow the logic. Coinbase is competing with Binance, which already has Binance Launchpad and other platforms that give retail investors access to early token sales. Coinbase doesn’t have that. Echo does have that. So Coinbase is buying the infrastructure and the brand and the community that Fish built over a decade of not trying to maximise his dollar earnings.

Here is how Fish described the outcome:

“When I started building Echo 2 years ago, I knew it had a 95% chance of failing. To be honest, I couldn’t really imagine any other outcome, but I thought that at least it might be a noble failure worth attempting. I certainly didn’t think Echo would be sold to Coinbase, but here we are.”

Probably the most honest description of a successful startup exit I have ever read.

What This Means for the Rest of Us

Fish’s story creates a problem for the standard crypto wealth narrative. The narrative is supposed to be: buy low, sell high, repeat until you’re a billionaire. Maybe throw in some 100x leverage trades if you are feeling adventurous. Fish didn’t do that. He bought Bitcoin with $200, made some small trades, built a failed altcoin, got a normal job, came back to crypto, supported good projects, exposed fraud, started a podcast, built a fundraising platform, and sold it to Coinbase.

That is a much longer and weirder path than “bought Dogecoin at $0.0001 and sold at $0.70.”

When people speculated that Fish was a billionaire, he wrote a long thread explaining that he wasn’t. His actual net worth, including the Echo exit and a decade of crypto holdings, is probably in the high nine figures. That is an enormous amount of money. But it took 12 years of grinding through multiple bear markets, surviving scams and frauds and exchange collapses, and consistently choosing not to maximise short-term profits.

Fish probably made more money by treating crypto as a place to build things than he would have made by treating it as a casino. And if that’s true, it suggests that most people are playing the wrong game.

Crypto Twitter doesn’t want to hear about getting rich in a decade. But that might be the only way it actually works.

In 2013, Wood met a young programmer named Vitalik Buterin who had an interesting idea about putting a computer on a blockchain. Wood thought this was neat, wrote the first working version of it in a month, invented a programming language for it, and then wrote the first formal specification of any blockchain protocol in history. That computer is now worth about $300 billion and runs most of the decentralised finance industry. Then Wood left, said the architecture was fundamentally limited, and built a different computer-on-blockchain that could run multiple blockchains at once.

That one is worth about $5 billion. Now he’s doing it again, because apparently the second one also has limitations.

The Moodbar Years

Before Gavin Wood was reinventing the internet, he was trying to help people navigate their music collections. His 2005 PhD thesis at the University of York was titled “Content-based visualisation to aid common navigation of musical audio.”

What if you could look at a song and know what it sounded like? What if complex data structures could be transformed into intuitive visual representations?

He built something called Moodbar, which graphically represented audio files. It’s still used in some Linux music applications today. This seems almost embarrassingly quaint now, like mentioning that Steve Jobs once designed a nice font. But the skill was the thing: taking something abstract and computational and making it visible, understandable, usable.

Wood was born in Lancaster, England in April 1980 and was raised by his mother in a single-parent household. He attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School, where he was apparently very good at mathematics and programming. He did a master’s degree, then a PhD, then worked as a researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge. He consulted for tech companies. He was interested in programming languages and formal verification and game theory.

In 2011, someone told him about Bitcoin. He was unimpressed. The monetary focus didn’t interest him. But the underlying technology did, eventually. What could you do with a blockchain beyond just moving money around?

This is where the story really starts, because in 2013 someone introduced him to Vitalik Buterin.

Ethereum, Or: The First Computer For The Entire Planet

Buterin had been thinking about a blockchain that could run programs, not just track who owned what. Smart contracts, he called them. But thinking about something and actually building it are different problems.

Wood joined what would become the core Ethereum team in early 2014. By January, he had coded the first functional Ethereum client, nicknamed “PoC-1.” Then he wrote the Ethereum Yellow Paper, the first formal specification of any blockchain protocol. Then he invented Solidity, the programming language that people use to write smart contracts. Then he wrote much of Ethereum’s first client implementation.

His guiding vision, which he talked about constantly, was making Ethereum “a computer for the entire planet.” A decentralised platform for applications beyond finance. Games. Voting. Social networks. Whatever people wanted to build.

Wood became Ethereum’s first Chief Technology Officer. Ethereum launched in 2015 and by most measures it worked. It still works. At this point, there are probably several thousand people whose job titles are some variation of “Solidity developer,” and they’re all using a language that Wood invented in 2014.

But by 2016, Wood was restless. He later described Ethereum’s governance as a “technocracy” lacking community-led evolution. There were technical limitations he thought were fundamental. Scalability problems. Interoperability issues. The whole single-chain paradigm seemed wrong to him.

In January 2016, he left the Ethereum Foundation to pursue new ambitions.

Parity And The Wallet Incidents

Right after leaving Ethereum, Wood co-founded Parity Technologies with Jutta Steiner. They built infrastructure: a faster Rust-based Ethereum client called Parity Ethereum, a framework called Substrate for creating custom blockchains.

But 2017 brought two incidents that would become cautionary tales in blockchain security history.

In July 2017, a critical bug in Parity’s multi-signature wallet code allowed a hacker to steal over 150,000 ETH, worth about $30 million at the time. The vulnerability was in a smart contract called wallet.sol. A programmer-introduced flaw allowed the attacker to re-initialise the wallet contract and gain control with a single transaction. This was bad, but at least it was a straightforward hack that could be understood and fixed.

Then in November 2017, an anonymous user accidentally triggered a bug in the Parity wallet smart contract library by calling a self-destruct function. This erased the underlying code that all multi-sig wallets deployed after July 20 relied on. The result: approximately 513,774 ETH (valued around $150-280 million at the time) became permanently frozen in over 500 wallets. The funds weren’t stolen. They were just locked forever, because the code that governed them had been deleted.

The Ethereum community debated solutions, including a controversial hard fork to reverse the effects, but no full remedy was implemented. The frozen funds remained frozen. Parity issued warnings, worked with affected users where possible, and publicly acknowledged both incidents as painful learning experiences.

These events were significant setbacks. They also illustrated a fundamental tension in blockchain development: immutability is a feature until it becomes a problem, and smart contract code that can’t be changed is secure until it has a bug you can’t fix. Wood and Parity Technologies used these incidents to inform better coding practices and security audits going forward, but the November incident in particular remains unresolved to this day.

It’s worth noting that these disasters didn’t derail Parity’s long-term work. The company continued building infrastructure that would eventually underpin Polkadot. But they serve as a reminder that even the people writing the formal specifications of blockchain protocols can ship code with catastrophic vulnerabilities.

Polkadot, Or: The Internet Of Blockchains

Right after leaving Ethereum, Wood co-founded Parity Technologies with Jutta Steiner. They built infrastructure: a faster Rust-based Ethereum client, a framework called Substrate for creating custom blockchains.

But Wood was also working on something bigger. In 2016, he authored what would become the Polkadot White Paper. The idea was a “heterogeneous multi-chain” protocol. Instead of one blockchain doing everything, you could have multiple specialised blockchains that all shared security and could communicate with each other. An “Internet of Blockchains.”

How do you let different blockchains talk to each other securely, when they have different rules and different consensus mechanisms? Wood’s answer involved a relay chain (the backbone) and parachains (specialised chains that connect to it). The relay chain handles security and consensus. The parachains do whatever they need to do.

In 2017, Wood founded the Web3 Foundation to support this vision. Polkadot launched in May 2020. It raised about $144 million in its initial token sale. By late 2021, it had working parachains and a market cap in the tens of billions of dollars.

It is worth noting that Wood also coined the term “Web3” in 2014, back when he was still at Ethereum. He meant it to describe a decentralised internet controlled by users rather than corporations. Now the term means a hundred different things to a hundred different people, many of them involving cartoon apes, but Wood’s original vision was more philosophical: a user-sovereign internet where you control your data and identity.

Kusama, Or: Chaos As A Product

Before launching Polkadot, Wood and the team launched Kusama in 2019. Kusama is described as Polkadot’s “canary network,” which is blockchain-speak for “the place where we try things that might explode before we try them on the expensive network.”

But Kusama has real economic value. Real governance. Real stakes. The tagline is “Expect Chaos” and “No Promises,” which is either radical honesty or excellent marketing, possibly both.

One of the more interesting experiments was the Kusama Society, where people could get KSM tokens for getting Kusama-themed tattoos. This was partly a social experiment and partly an early version of proof-of-personhood. A lot of people got the tattoos. One person who joined early made about $100,000 from his tattoo when KSM prices peaked.

The Problems With Success

By 2021-2022, Polkadot was live and working. Parachains were running. The first parachain auctions happened in December 2021, with enormous amounts of capital locked up in crowdloans. Everything was, by the standards of blockchain projects, going well.

And then Wood started saying the whole thing needed to change.

In late 2024, he announced what the community called an “ideological bombshell”. He nominated Proof-of-Stake, the consensus mechanism he had designed for Polkadot, was “dragging down” the network’s security model. He proposed eliminating traditional staking rewards and moving toward a proof-of-personhood system instead.

This was not a small pivot. The entire economic model of Polkadot was built around staking DOT tokens and earning rewards. Now Wood was saying maybe that was wrong? Maybe instead of economic-based consensus, we need identity-based consensus?

He also proposed radical changes to Polkadot’s issuance curve, essentially cutting inflation dramatically. The treasury, which had been spending about $37 million on marketing, suddenly had to become much more conservative. There were debates about governance effectiveness. About whether power was too concentrated among large token holders.

JAM, Or: The Third Computer For The Planet

In 2024, Wood unveiled JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine), detailed in what he called the “Gray Paper.” JAM is meant to transform Polkadot from a platform for blockchain interoperability into a more general-purpose computing platform.

The technical details involve things like “core time” and “accumulation” mechanisms. The philosophical point is that Wood thinks blockchain architecture still has fundamental limitations that need solving.

JAM is an evolution of Polkadot. Wood has always preferred systematic improvement over revolutionary replacement. But it’s still the third time he’s said “the computer we built is good but we can build a better computer.”

To incentivise development, Wood and the Web3 Foundation announced a prize of 10 million DOT for additional JAM implementations. At current prices that’s about $32 million.

The CEO Who Didn’t Want To Be CEO

In October 2022, Wood stepped down as CEO of Parity Technologies. His blog post explaining the decision was remarkably candid: “The role of CEO has never been one which I have coveted. I can act at being a CEO well enough for a short while, but it’s not where I’m going to find eternal happiness. Anyone who has worked with me knows where my heart lies. I’m a thinker, coder, designer and architect.”

He said he worked best asynchronously, that a great day for him was “taking 10 hours straight to think out some problem, prototype something or collapse some disparate thoughts into an article.”

He became Parity’s Chief Architect instead, then later Chief White Space Officer, a title that perfectly captures his preference for working on things that don’t exist yet.

But then in August 2025, he came back as CEO. The announcement said “the foundations are now in place” and the market was ready for the next phase.

Wood’s blockchain projects keep trying to escape this uniformity trap. Ethereum was one computer for everyone. Polkadot was many specialised computers that could talk to each other. JAM is attempting something even more flexible. Each iteration is trying to build systems that allow for difference, for specialisation, for context.

The answer to power is transparency and verification, not trust. Build systems where trust isn’t necessary. Build tools that work regardless of the motives of the builders.

For years, Parity’s strategy was staying in the background as a tech provider. Build the platform, let others build the products. Wood concluded this wasn’t enough. If he wanted to see better products on Polkadot, Parity would have to build them. The list includes: a proper Polkadot app, a desktop application, a website that actually works, better governance tools. Also a DOT-collateralised stablecoin, though the community is currently voting that down (they like the idea, just not the specific implementation).

Looking at Wood’s career, there’s a clear pattern: Build something. Realise it has fundamental limitations. Build something better. Realise that has limitations too. Build something even better. You can view this as either admirable iterative improvement or slightly exhausting perfectionism.

But there’s a third interpretation that’s less flattering: Maybe this is just abandoning things when they get hard? Ethereum needed years of grinding work to scale and achieve product-market fit. Wood left in 2016. Polkadot needed similar grinding work to build adoption and compete with newer, faster chains. Wood stepped back in 2022, then returned in 2025 with plans to fundamentally restructure it. At what point does “iterative improvement” become “chasing the next shiny thing because making the current thing succeed at scale is boring and difficult”?

The charitable interpretation is that Wood correctly identifies architectural limitations early, before they become insurmountable, and has the courage to start over rather than optimise a fundamentally limited design. The less charitable interpretation is that he’s better at inventing new systems than at the unglamorous work of making existing systems win in the market. Probably it’s both.

His estimated net worth is around $450 million. Outside blockchain, he pursues photography, music, philosophy. He holds a black belt in Taekwondo. In 2022, he donated $5.8 million to Ukraine.

Gavin Wood keeps building computers for planets, and each time he builds one, he immediately starts thinking about how the next one should work better. At this point, it’s probably just what he does.

There is a guy who created the second-oldest cryptocurrency that still matters, sold all of it near the top of a bull market, and then spent the next seven years working on it anyway. This is objectively weird. Most people who sell their entire stake in something they created are either (a) getting out because they think it’s doomed, or (b) moving on to something more exciting. Charlie Lee did neither. He sold his Litecoin in December 2017 because holding it while tweeting about it was a “conflict of interest,” and then kept showing up to work on Litecoin every day like nothing had happened.

This creates some interesting dynamics. If you’re a crypto founder with a big bag, people accuse you of pumping whenever you say anything positive.

If you sell everything, people accuse you of abandoning ship. Lee chose the second problem over the first, which is perhaps the most Charlie Lee thing possible: solving one issue by creating a different, arguably worse issue, and then just dealing with it.

Charlie Lee was born in 1977 in the Ivory Coast, which is not where you typically expect cryptocurrency founders to come from, but then again, there isn’t really a typical origin story for cryptocurrency founders. His family moved to New Jersey when he was 13. He attended a prep school, then went to MIT, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s in computer science. This is a pretty standard trajectory for someone who would eventually work at Google, which he did from 2007 to 2013, contributing to things like Chrome OS and YouTube Mobile.

In 2011, while still at Google, Lee read an article about Silk Road. For those who weren’t around back then, Silk Road was an online marketplace for drugs and other illegal things, and it only accepted Bitcoin. This was how a lot of people found out about Bitcoin in 2011. You would read some article about how criminals were using magic internet money to buy drugs, and you would think “Wait, what is this magic internet money?” and then you’d fall down the rabbit hole.

Lee went down the rabbit hole. He had always been skeptical of the Federal Reserve and had been trading gold as an alternative investment. Bitcoin made sense to him. He bought some at $30 per coin. The problem was that buying Bitcoin in 2011 was extremely difficult. There was one major exchange, Mt. Gox, located in Japan, and the process of getting your money there and then extracting Bitcoin was complicated and sketchy.

So, Lee, like many early Bitcoin users, used LocalBitcoins to meet strangers in person and trade cash for coins. He’d sit at a McDonald’s or Starbucks, wait for a Bitcoin transaction to confirm (which takes an average of 10 minutes, but can sometimes take over an hour), and then hand over cash. He describes this process as feeling “like a drug deal,” which is accurate. The problem was the waiting. Sitting in a McDonald’s for an hour with a stranger you just met on the internet, waiting for a blockchain confirmation, is not fun.

The Fairbix Failure and the Litecoin Launch

Lee’s first attempt at creating a cryptocurrency was called Fairbix. It was a clone of another early cryptocurrency called Tenebrix. Fairbix died within weeks due to a bug related to transactions, which Lee decided not to fix because he was already working on something else: Litecoin.

On October 7, 2011, Lee posted on the Bitcointalk forum announcing Litecoin. He had written it in his spare time while working at Google, mining only 150 coins before making it public. The idea was to create “silver to Bitcoin’s gold.” Bitcoin would be for large transactions and storing value, while Litecoin would be for buying coffee.

Litecoin blocks confirm every 2.5 minutes, compared to Bitcoin’s 10 minutes. It uses a different mining algorithm called Scrypt instead of Bitcoin’s SHA-256. The total supply would be 84 million coins, as opposed to Bitcoin’s 21 million. Transaction fees would also be lower.

These might sound like minor tweaks, but they mattered for Lee’s original use case of sitting at McDonald’s buying Bitcoin from strangers. With Litecoin, you would only have to wait 2.5 minutes instead of 10.

Another crucial move Lee made was launching Litecoin fairly. This is important because it explains why Litecoin survived when basically every other 2011 altcoin died. Before Litecoin, there were about a dozen other Bitcoin alternatives. They all failed, and Lee thinks the main reason is that they were “premined.” The creators would mine a bunch of coins for themselves before releasing the software publicly, giving themselves a huge advantage. If the coin succeeded, the creators would get rich. This made people distrust these projects. It’s not a new story, is it?

Lee mined 150 Litecoins and then released the code. On day one, around a thousand other people started mining alongside him. Nobody had an unfair advantage. This turned out to be a big deal.

The Google Years and the Coinbase Years

Lee continued working at Google for two more years after launching Litecoin. In 2013, he left to join Coinbase as an engineering manager. This was back when Coinbase was a startup, before it became the default way normal people buy crypto. Lee worked there until 2017, eventually becoming director of engineering. During this time, Coinbase added support for Litecoin, which created an interesting situation where Lee was working at an exchange that listed his own cryptocurrency. Apparently, this was fine.

In 2017, Lee left Coinbase to work full-time on the Litecoin Foundation, a nonprofit he had founded to develop and promote Litecoin. And then, in December 2017, he did the thing that everyone still talks about.

The sale at the top.

December 2017 marked the peak of the first major crypto bull market that caught the attention of the public. Bitcoin hit $19,000, and Litecoin hit $375. Lee announced on Reddit that he had sold or donated all of his Litecoin holdings.

His explanation was that holding Litecoin while being its most public advocate created a conflict of interest. “Whenever I tweet about Litecoin price or even just good or bad news, I get accused of doing it for personal benefit,” he wrote. So he sold everything. He kept a few physical Litecoins as collectibles, but that was it.

The community reacted about how you would expect. Some people thought it was noble and transparent. Most people thought he was abandoning the project.

The timing was particularly bad because, as it turned out, December 2017 was very close to the market top. Litecoin would eventually drop to around $25 in 2018, while Lee had sold at $375.

This is the kind of thing that would normally end a founder’s credibility. But Lee just kept working on Litecoin. He showed up to the Litecoin Foundation. He contributed code. He did interviews. He tweeted (still from the handle @SatoshiLite). He acted like someone who still owned a bunch of Litecoin, except he didn’t own any.

What Litecoin Actually Does

While all this drama was happening, Litecoin just kept working. Every 2.5 minutes, like clockwork, for 14 years now, it has processed blocks. It has never had a major outage or needed to restart. This is actually impressive. A lot of blockchains have had problems. Litecoin has just worked.

The main thing Litecoin does is payments.According to BitPay, a major crypto payment processor, Litecoin is consistently the most-used cryptocurrency for actual transactions by number of payments. More than Bitcoin, more than Ethereum, more than stablecoins. However, when measured by the total value or volume of payments, Bitcoin still accounts for a much larger share. Litecoin’s advantage is in smaller, everyday transactions, it’s faster and cheaper than Bitcoin while still being relatively simple and reliable.

In 2017, before Bitcoin, Litecoin activated SegWit, a technical upgrade that enabled the Lightning Network. Lee did this deliberately to test whether it would work, since Litecoin is similar enough to Bitcoin that it could serve as a testnet. There was a lot of fear-mongering at the time about SegWit being dangerous, but once it launched on Litecoin and nothing broke, Bitcoin followed suit. So Litecoin actually helped Bitcoin ship an important upgrade.

More recently, Litecoin added something called MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB), which adds optional privacy features. This is controversial because privacy in crypto makes regulators nervous, but Lee pushed for it anyway because he thinks fungibility (the property where every coin is interchangeable with every other coin) is important for money. With MWEB, you can send Litecoin transactions where only you and the recipient know the amount. The blockchain still works, but observers can’t see the details.

This is one of those cases where having a founder who can “steer the ship,” as Lee puts it, makes things happen that would be hard to do otherwise. Bitcoin doesn’t have this. Bitcoin has a lot of arguing and not much shipping. Litecoin has Lee saying “we’re doing this” and then they do it.

The Institutional Era

In 2024, things started getting weird in a different way. Canary Capital Group LLC filed for an ETF with the SEC. A company called Lite Strategy launched with a Litecoin treasury, similar to MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin strategy. In July 2024, Lee pledged to personally match up to $250,000 per year in Litecoin Foundation funding for the next five years.

None of this is what you would expect from someone who sold all their holdings because they thought it was a conflict of interest. But here we are. The ETF got delayed because of a government shutdown, while Lite Strategy traded on NASDAQ. Lee continued to be actively involved.

In a 2025 interview, Lee made some interesting comments. He said that if he could do it over, he would “just stack bitcoin and disappear.” He said creating Litecoin “did not make him more money” and that simply buying and holding Bitcoin would have been more profitable. This is probably true. If he had taken the money he spent on Litecoin’s development into Bitcoin in 2011, he would be much richer.

But that’s not really the point, is it? Lee also said he sometimes wishes he had stayed anonymous like Satoshi Nakamoto. Being a public founder of a cryptocurrency is stressful. People yell at you on Twitter. Every decision you make gets second-guessed. When you sell your coins, people accuse you of abandoning the project. When you don’t sell your coins, people accuse you of pumping your bags.

Satoshi solved this by disappearing. Lee solved it by selling everything and then staying anyway, which is possibly more stressful but at least it’s honest.

He has influence without financial skin in the game. He can advocate for Litecoin without people accusing him of pumping his bags. The cost is that people instead accuse him of not believing in the project he’s spending all his time on.

The Competitive Landscape

Litecoin is currently the 31st-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, with about $7 billion. While it’s down from its peak, it remains significant. Litecoin has been around longer than almost everything except Bitcoin. It has survived multiple cycles where most altcoins died.

But it’s also not growing the way newer cryptocurrencies have grown. Ethereum has smart contracts. Solana is fast. Cardano has a devoted community. Litecoin is just Litecoin. It’s silver to Bitcoin’s gold, which is exactly what Lee always said it would be, but that’s not a particularly exciting narrative in an industry that runs on exciting narratives.

Lee seems fine with this. His goal, as he’s stated, is to create “sound money.” He believes that cryptocurrency is “a better form of money than anything humanity has ever seen,” and that eventually only a few cryptocurrencies will survive. When that happens, he thinks Litecoin will be one of them, and it will actually be used like money instead of being a speculative asset.

Lee created Litecoin in 2011 as a faster, cheaper alternative to Bitcoin. He launched it fairly, positioned it as complementary to Bitcoin, and spent 14 years maintaining it even after selling his entire stake.

You could argue this is inefficient. If he had stayed at Google and gotten promoted, he would have a steadier career. If he had sold his Litecoin and moved on to the next project, he could have tried to catch another wave. If he had taken all the energy he spent on Litecoin and directed it elsewhere, the returns might have been better.

But he didn’t do any of that. He created Litecoin, sold it to avoid conflicts of interest, and then kept working on it because he believes it’s useful. This is either very principled or very stubborn, depending on how you look at it.

When Diem collapsed under regulatory pressure in 2021, Ching and his team doubled down. Within months, they founded Aptos Labs with a clear thesis to build a blockchain that could actually handle institutional finance at global scale.

Avery Ching grew up in Honolulu, attending Punahou School from kindergarten through high school. The same school that produced Barack Obama.

He left Hawaii for Evanston, Illinois, enrolling at Northwestern University to study computer engineering. The transition from island life to Midwestern winters might have been jarring, but Ching found his element in Northwestern’s computer science labs.

His undergraduate focus was learning how to build systems that could handle complex computations across multiple machines simultaneously. But it was during his PhD work, defended in October 2007, that Ching developed the expertise that could define his career.

His dissertation specialised in supercomputing, parallel computing frameworks, and high-performance file systems. These are the foundation for every large-scale system that powers modern internet services.

Ching’s PhD advisor, Professor Alok Choudhary, was working on problems that companies like Google and Facebook were beginning to confront: how do you process massive amounts of data when that data is spread across thousands of machines?

The answer was about designing systems that could coordinate work across distributed infrastructure without bottlenecks or single points of failure.

This insight, developed in academic labs, would become Ching’s secret weapon when he entered the industry.

Building the System That Mapped Facebook’s Universe

In October 2007, the same month Ching defended his PhD, he joined Yahoo as a Principal Software Engineer. At the time, Yahoo was still a key player in tech, grappling with how to process the vast amounts of data generated by hundreds of millions of users.

Ching saw an opportunity. Social networks generate a specific kind of data structure: graphs. Every user is a node. Every friendship, every message, every interaction is an edge connecting nodes. The question was how to analyse these graphs when they grew to billions of nodes and trillions of edges.

His answer was Apache Giraph, an open-source distributed graph processing system. The project took inspiration from Google’s Pregel paper but made the technology accessible to any company that wanted to analyse graph data at scale.

Rather than trying to load an entire graph into the memory of a single machine (which was impossible at Facebook’s scale), Giraph distributed the graph across many machines. Each machine processed its portion of the graph, then communicated with other machines to coordinate results.

The system worked. Facebook adopted Giraph and used it to power Graph Search, a feature that lets users search their social network for things like “photos of my friends in Paris” or “restaurants my friends like in New York.”

More importantly, Giraph could analyse Facebook’s entire social graph in under four minutes using commodity hardware.

The Diem Detour

In 2011, Ching left Yahoo for Facebook (later Meta), where he spent the next decade building the infrastructure that powered the company’s analytics capabilities. He led teams working on Apache Spark, Hadoop, distributed scheduling, and the unified programming models that let Meta’s engineers analyse data across hundreds of thousands of machines.

Then, Meta announced plans for Libra, a digital currency project (later known as Diem).

The vision was to create a blockchain-based payment system that could serve billions of people worldwide, particularly those without access to traditional banking. Meta would provide the distribution through Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. The blockchain would provide the infrastructure for cheap, fast, global payments.

Ching was appointed Tech Lead for Meta’s crypto platform, where his team was responsible for building the blockchain itself, the wallet infrastructure, and the strategy for ecosystem development.

Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, which sacrifice speed for decentralisation, Diem was designed to handle thousands of transactions per second while maintaining security and regulatory compliance. The team developed the Move programming language specifically for Diem, with built-in safeguards that made certain types of smart contract bugs impossible by design.

However, Diem faced problems that engineering couldn’t solve. Regulators around the world worried about Facebook’s power and influence. If billions of people adopted a Facebook-backed currency, what would that mean for monetary policy? For financial stability? For privacy?

The regulatory pressure became insurmountable. By early 2022, Meta dissolved the Diem project. Years of work disappeared as the company retreated from its crypto ambitions.

Ching and his core team faced a choice: return to traditional infrastructure work at Meta, or take what they’d built and launch it independently.

They chose independence.

Building Aptos

In December 2021, Avery Ching co-founded Aptos Labs with Mo Shaikh, who had led partnerships and strategy for Diem.

Crypto prices were beginning their long descent into what would become the 2022 bear market. FTX hadn’t collapsed yet - no one saw that coming.

Ching and Shaikh didn’t care about market timing. They had built a blockchain they believed was technically better than anything else available. With the Move programming language, the parallel execution engine called BlockSTM, and the Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus mechanism, Aptos could process transactions faster than existing proof-of-stake systems.

The challenge, however, was whether anyone would care about technical quality when the entire crypto market was on the brink of collapse

In the early days of Aptos, Ching and his team had to convince skeptical investors why the world needed another layer-1 blockchain. Ethereum existed. So did Solana, Avalanche, Cosmos, and a host of other competitors vying for developers and users.

Ching’s pitch was different from typical crypto founders. He didn’t promise decentralisation utopia or revolutionary financial inclusion. He talked about what he knew, which was building scalable infrastructure.

“At Aptos, we think that our approach of being focused on upgradeability is actually the most important thing,” he explained. “The fact that you can start on a journey, and that journey can end up in a very different place because of the fact that you can continue to move the network forward.”

The focus on upgradeability came from hard-won experience at Meta. Systems that couldn’t adapt died. The ability to improve infrastructure without breaking existing applications was essential for long-term success.

Aptos launched its mainnet in October 2022, right as the crypto bear market deepened. FTX collapsed the following month, taking much of the industry’s credibility with it.

While retail investors fled crypto, institutions became more interested. The FTX disaster showed what happened when crypto infrastructure was built poorly. Companies like BlackRock and Franklin Templeton started looking for blockchain platforms that met institutional standards for security, compliance, and reliability.

Aptos’s enterprise pedigree suddenly became an advantage.

The Tokenisation Bet That’s Paying Off

By 2023, Ching had narrowed Aptos’s focus considerably. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, he positioned the blockchain as “the global trading engine” for tokenised real-world assets.

Traditional finance suffers from too much friction. Settlement takes days. Cross-border transactions are expensive. Trading hours are limited. Custody requires multiple intermediaries.

Blockchain, on the other hand, could eliminate much of that friction. By putting real-world assets on a blockchain, you can trade them 24/7, settle instantly, and drastically reduce custody costs.

But tokenisation required more than just technology. It required partnerships with institutions that had the assets, the regulatory relationships, and the capital to make tokenisation real.

Ching started signing those partnerships. BlackRock brought its BUIDL fund to Aptos, contributing $500 million in tokenised assets. Franklin Templeton launched tokenised money market funds on the platform. Apollo began exploring tokenised credit products.

By mid-2025, Aptos was hosting over $1.2 billion in tokenised real-world assets.

The Korean market became another area of focus. Korea has high trading volumes, a large retail investor base, and cultural acceptance of digital assets. Ching established partnerships with Lotte Group, one of Korea’s largest retailers, which used Aptos to issue mobile vouchers.

“As we start to work with larger retailers and engage with banks and large payment corporations, we’re seeing interest from Korea pick up rapidly,” Ching said in late 2024. “The new government seems very supportive of crypto. I expect a very fast acceleration in Korea.”

The Korean partnerships validated Ching’s strategy: find real-world use cases where blockchain provides clear benefits, then scale up quickly.

In December 2024, Mo Shaikh stepped down from his leadership role at Aptos. Ching, who had served as CTO, took over as CEO.

As CTO, Ching had overseen technical development. As CEO, he would be responsible for the strategic direction and the partnerships that would determine whether Aptos succeeded or failed.

Ching’s first nine months as CEO have been spent sharpening Aptos’s positioning. Rather than competing with every other blockchain for developers and retail users, he’s focused on becoming the infrastructure that institutions use to tokenise and trade real-world assets.

But Ching isn’t just focused on building technology. He’s also engaging with regulators to help shape the rules that will govern tokenised assets.

In June 2025, he was appointed to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Digital Asset Markets Subcommittee. The role gives him a voice in shaping U.S. regulations around digital assets.

“Avery will collaborate with other leaders from web3 and financial services to help shape digital asset regulations,” Aptos Labs announced when the appointment was made public.

For Ching, this regulatory work is essential. Institutional adoption of blockchain requires clear regulatory frameworks. Without such clarity, institutions can’t commit capital at scale.

The Builder’s Approach to Crypto

Ching doesn’t talk about decentralisation as an end goal. He doesn’t promise to overthrow traditional finance or create a new economic system. Instead, he focuses on solving practical problems: making transactions faster, reducing costs, improving security, and enabling new types of financial products.

This pragmatism comes from his background building infrastructure at Yahoo and Meta. Those companies weren’t concerned with theoretical elegance. They cared about systems that worked reliably for billions of users.

Ching’s focus on practical applications has attracted institutions that would never consider more ideological crypto projects. BlackRock and Franklin Templeton, for example, aren’t interested in disrupting central banks or creating parallel financial systems. They want infrastructure that allows them to offer better products to their clients.

Aptos gives them that infrastructure.

This is the engineer’s faith that better tools lead to better outcomes. That efficiency has its own morality. That making something work for a billion people is its own form of idealism.

He’s not trying to change human nature. He’s accepting it and building accordingly. In the end, that might be the most radical position of all.

The Whitepaper Moment

2019. Shayne Coplan is done with crypto.

Two and a half years after dropping out of NYU, his ventures have gone nowhere. The promised revolution has turned into what he calls “crypto grifts” which are projects designed to extract money rather than create value.

He’s broke, frustrated, and watching an industry he believed in become a casino for scammers.

So he stops hustling and starts reading. Academic papers. Dense research. Specifically, economist Robin Hanson’s work on prediction markets.

The theory is that markets aggregate information better than experts, polls, or any traditional forecasting method. When people put money behind their beliefs, collective wisdom reveals the truth.

Prediction markets had proven this in academic settings. The Iowa Electronic Markets had outperformed traditional polls since 1988. But these platforms remained niche. Academic. Inaccessible to ordinary people.

Coplan saw the gap.

“This is too good of an idea to just exist in whitepapers,” he wrote.

He spent a year studying how prediction markets worked, why they hadn’t scaled, and what conditions would need to exist for mass adoption. A year of research while his bank account drained.

Most people would have gotten a job.

Then COVID-19 shut down the world.

The Bathroom Office

March 2020. The world locks down.

People are stuck at home. Glued to screens. Desperate for information about what happens next. Will schools reopen? Will there be a vaccine? How long will this last?

Traditional institutions such as governments, health organisations,and the media are struggling to provide reliable answers. Everyone has opinions. Nobody knows for sure.

Coplan sees the moment clearly.

At 21, running out of money, with nothing to show for two and a half years since dropping out, he starts building. From what he would later describe as a “makeshift bathroom office” in his Lower East Side apartment.

June 2020. Polymarket launches.

The platform is simple. Users bet cryptocurrency on real-world outcomes. Each question becomes a market. You buy shares representing “yes” or “no” outcomes. Shares pay $1 if you’re right, zero if you’re wrong. The market price reflects collective probability.

If a share trades at 65 cents, the crowd believes there’s a 65% chance the event happens.

Pure information. No experts. No spin. Just money behind beliefs.

Building a prediction market requires solving technical problems around data feeds, market resolution, and user experience. It requires creating trust between strangers betting on everything from elections to pop culture.

It also requires navigating regulatory gray zones.

Prediction markets look like gambling to some regulators, and like financial derivatives to others. Their legal status is unclear.

Coplan’s approach? Build first and ask for permission later.

The strategy works for two years.

2022. Polymarket has attracted attention.

Trading volume is growing. Users are making predictions on everything from Oscar winners to economic indicators. The platform is gaining credibility as an alternative to traditional forecasting.

Then the Commodity Futures Trading Commission comes knocking.

The allegations: offering illegal trading contracts, and operating as an unregistered exchange. The settlement: $1.4 million, without admitting or denying wrongdoing.

More significantly: Polymarket agrees to block all U.S.-based users.

This restriction creates a paradox, the platform can operate globally but not in America. International users can bet on U.S. elections, but American citizens can’t participate in markets about their own country’s politics.

Regulators suspect the platform continues to host U.S. users anyway.

2024. The presidential election approaches.

Polymarket becomes impossible to ignore. Users wager more than $3.5 billion on election outcomes. The platform consistently shows Trump ahead while traditional polls show a tight race.

One French trader bets tens of millions on a Trump victory. When Trump wins, the trader reportedly makes $85 million.

The platform’s predictions prove more accurate than conventional polling.

Then comes the raid.

November 2024. One week after Election Day.

FBI agents arrive at Coplan’s New York City apartment before dawn. They seize his cellphone and electronic devices. Coplan, now 26, isn’t arrested. Isn’t charged.

His response on X: “New phone, who dis?”

Polymarket issues a statement: “obvious political retribution by the outgoing administration.”

The Justice Department opens an investigation. So does the CFTC.

The platform that had just proved its forecasting power is now facing federal scrutiny from multiple agencies.

Coplan keeps building.

But circumstances can change quickly in America. The investigations that began under Biden’s administration end under Trump’s.

July 2025. Both the Justice Department and CFTC formally drop their investigations. No charges. No additional penalties.

That same month, Polymarket acquired QCEX for $112 million.

QCEX is a CFTC-licensed exchange and clearinghouse. The acquisition provides what Coplan had been working toward since the 2022 settlement: a legal framework for operating in the United States.

August 2025. Donald Trump Jr., son of President Trump, joins Polymarket as an advisor through his partnership with investment firm 1789 Capital. The company that had been raided under one administration is now advised by the family of the next.

What Actually Got Built

Polymarket solved problems that previous prediction markets couldn’t.

Earlier platforms like Intrade had proven the concept worked. Intrade successfully predicted the 2008 and 2012 elections before shutting down in 2013. But these predecessors remained niche. They required understanding complex mechanics and felt academic, not mainstream.

Polymarket made prediction markets feel like entertainment.

The interface was simple with questions ranging from serious (Will the Fed cut rates?) to trivial (Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce engaged in 2025?). The mix created engagement.

More importantly, the platform tapped into changing information habits.

Traditional media told you what to think. Polls told you what others thought. Polymarket told you what people believed strongly enough to bet money on.

The distinction mattered to users who’d grown skeptical of institutions.

Now, over 1.3 million users. Around $20 billion in trading volume. Over $1 billion monthly in trades.

The 2024 election proved the platform’s potential. While mainstream polls showed a close race, Polymarket users consistently favored Trump. The prediction proved accurate.

Whether the platform aggregated genuine intelligence or just reflected the demographics of crypto users betting on politics remains debatable. But the outcome validated prediction markets’ core claim: money behind beliefs tends toward truth.

Of course, being a prediction market means Polymarket occasionally has to answer genuinely philosophical questions, like “What is a suit?” In June 2025, bettors wagered nearly $79 million on whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would wear a suit before July. When photos emerged of Zelenskyy at a NATO meeting wearing a matching black jacket and pants with a collared shirt — but also trainers — the internet melted down. Is it a suit if the shoes are wrong? Does matching fabric count if the cut is casual? Fashion commentator Derek Guy, brought in as an expert, helpfully declared Zelenskyy’s outfit was “both a suit and not a suit,” which solved absolutely nothing. The market disputed the outcome twice. This is what happens when you create trustless, decentralised verification of real-world events: eventually you need a blockchain oracle to rule on tailoring semantics while $79 million hangs in the balance.

What Comes Next

At 27, Shayne Coplan has validated his conviction that prediction markets matter.

The token hints suggest the next phase is beginning. A $POLY token would complete Polymarket’s evolution from experimental prediction market to full crypto ecosystem.

Token holders might gain governance rights, fee sharing, special platform access. The specifics remain unclear. But the trajectory is obvious.

The token strategy carries risks. It could attract new regulatory scrutiny just as Polymarket achieves legitimacy. It could alienate users who view the platform as a forecasting tool rather than a crypto project.

However, the journey from that Caltech interview room to running a crypto company worth billions required Kannan to answer that 30-year question three separate times, changing his answer with each new stage.

Kannan grew up in Chennai, southern India, where pure mathematics captured his imagination early. He stayed in India for his undergraduate degree at the College of Engineering, Guindy, where he worked on ANUSAT, India’s first student-designed microsatellite. The project gave him a taste for complex systems and coordination problems.

In 2008, he moved to the United States with just $40 in his pocket. He pursued telecommunications at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, then went on to earn both a master’s in mathematics and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His doctoral work focused on network information theory which is essentially, how information flows through networks of nodes. He spent six years solving long-standing open problems in the field. When he finally cracked them, twenty people in his subfield took notice. Nobody else did.

The disappointment led to a reckoning. He’d optimised for curiosity and intellectual beauty, not impact. You can’t expect real-world change as a random byproduct if you’re not deliberately pursuing it.

He drew a two-axis graph. Technical depth on the X-axis. Impact on the Y-axis. His work sat firmly in the high-depth, low-impact quadrant. It was time to move on.

In 2012, he attended a talk on synthetic genomics by Craig Venter, one of the founders of the Human Genome Project. The field was inventing new species. Talking about making biological robots rather than mechanical ones. Why waste time optimising download speeds when you could be reprogramming life itself?

He switched completely. Computational genomics became his new focus during postdoctoral work at Berkeley and Stanford. He worked on DNA sequencing algorithms, building mathematical models to understand genetic structures.

Then artificial intelligence blindsided him. One of his students proposed using AI to solve the DNA sequencing problem. Kannan rejected it. Surely a neural network couldn’t outperform his carefully crafted mathematical models. The student built it anyway. Two weeks later, the AI demolished Kannan’s best benchmarks.

The message was that within a decade, AI would replace all his mathematical algorithms. Everything he’d built his career on would become obsolete.

He faced a choice to go deeper into AI-driven biology or try something new. He chose new.

From Buffalo to Earth

The Caltech question kept bothering him. Not because he’d failed to answer it, but because he’d never thought that way before. Most people work incrementally. You have X capabilities. You try to build X plus delta. Small improvements on what already exists.

The 30-year question demanded something different. It required imagining a destination without worrying about the path.

After joining the University of Washington as an assistant professor in 2014, Kannan formulated his first 30-year project: decode how information is stored in living systems. He assembled collaborators. Made progress. Everything seemed on track.

Then in 2017, his PhD advisor called with news about Bitcoin. It had throughput and latency problems which is exactly what Kannan had studied during his doctorate.

His initial reaction? Why would he abandon genomics for “random speculative BS”?

The technical fit was clear, but it seemed so far removed from his grand vision. Then he reread Yuval Noah Harari’s “Sapiens.” One idea stuck: Humans aren’t special because we innovate or because we’re intelligent. We’re special because we can coordinate at scale.

Coordination requires trust. The internet connected billions of people but left a gap. It gave us the ability to communicate instantly across continents, yet it provided no mechanism to ensure people would keep their word. Email could deliver a promise in milliseconds, but enforcing that promise still required lawyers, contracts, and centralised institutions.

Blockchains filled that gap. They were more than databases or digital currencies. They were enforcement engines that turned commitments into code. For the first time, strangers could make binding agreements without asking permission from banks, governments, or platforms. The code itself held people accountable.

This became his new 30-year thesis: to build humanity’s coordination engine.

But here, Kannan learned something that many academics often miss. Having a 30-year vision doesn’t mean you can jump straight to year 30. You have to earn the leverage to work on bigger problems.

Moving Earth requires a million times more energy than moving a buffalo. If you want to eventually move Earth, you can’t just announce that ambition and expect resources. You have to move a buffalo first according to Kannan. Then maybe a car. Then a building. Then a city. Each success gives you more leverage for the next challenge.

The world is designed this way for good reason. Give someone who’s never moved a buffalo the power to move Earth, and the whole thing might explode. Progressive leverage protects against catastrophic failure.

Kannan’s first attempt to move a buffalo was Trifecta. A high-throughput blockchain he built with two other professors. They pitched a blockchain running at 100,000 transactions per second. Nobody funded it.

Why? Nobody needed it. The team had optimised for technology without understanding market incentives or identifying clear customers. They’d hired people who all thought the same way — PhDs solving theoretical problems.

Trifecta failed. Kannan went back to academics and research.

Then he tried again with an NFT marketplace called Arctics. He was an advisor to Dapper Labs, which ran NBA Top Shot. The NFT space seemed promising. But as he built the marketplace, he kept running into infrastructure problems. How do you get a reliable price oracle for NFTs? How do you bridge NFTs between chains? How do you run different execution environments?

The marketplace failed too. He didn’t understand how NFT traders thought. If you’re not your own customer, you can’t build products that make sense.

Each problem required the same thing: a trust network.

Should he build an oracle? A bridge? Or should he build the meta thing that solves all these problems — the trust network itself?

That he understood. He was exactly the type of person who would build an oracle or a bridge. He could be his own customer.

In July 2021, Kannan founded Eigen Labs. The name came from the German word meaning “your own.” Anybody can build whatever they want. The core thesis is open innovation through shared security.

The technical innovation was “restaking.” Ethereum validators lock up ETH to secure the network. What if they could use those same assets to secure other protocols simultaneously? Instead of every new blockchain or service building its own security from scratch, they could borrow Ethereum’s established validator set.

Kannan pitched the idea to a16z five times before they funded him. One early pitch was memorable for the wrong reason. Kannan wanted to build on Cardano because it had $80 billion in market cap but no functioning smart contracts. The a16z partners took the call from outside a Solana conference. Their response: This is interesting. Why the hell are you on Cardano?

The feedback forced Kannan to think about focus. Startups are exponential games. You want to translate linear work into exponential impact. If you think you have three exponential ideas, you probably have none. You need to pick the one with the highest exponent and pour all your energy into it.

He refocused on Ethereum. The decision proved to be the right one. By 2023, EigenLayer had raised over $100 million from firms including Andreessen Horowitz. The protocol launched in stages, reaching $20 billion in total value locked at its peak.

Developers began building “actively validated services” (AVSs) on top of EigenLayer, everything from data availability layers to AI inference networks. Each could tap into Ethereum’s security pool without bootstrapping validators from scratch.

Success, however, brought scrutiny. In April 2024, EigenLayer announced its EIGEN token distribution, and a backlash followed.

The airdrop locked tokens for several months, preventing recipients from selling. Geographic restrictions excluded users in the United States, Canada, China, and other jurisdictions. Many early participants who’d deposited billions felt the distribution favoured insiders over community members.

The reaction caught Kannan off guard. The protocol saw a $351 million plunge in total value locked as users withdrew funds in protest. The controversy exposed a gap between Kannan’s academic mindset and the expectations of the crypto world.

Then came the conflict of interest scandal. In August 2024, CoinDesk reported that Eigen Labs employees had received nearly $5 million in airdrops from projects building on EigenLayer. Employees collectively claimed hundreds of thousands of tokens from projects like EtherFi, Renzo, and Altlayer. At least one project felt pressured to include employees in their distributions.

The revelation sparked accusations that EigenLayer was compromising its “credibly neutral” position, using influence to reward projects that provided tokens to employees.

Eigen Labs responded by banning ecosystem projects from airdropping to employees and implementing blackout periods. But the damage to its reputation had already been done.

Despite these controversies, EigenLayer continues to operate at the heart of Ethereum’s evolution. The protocol has established partnerships with major players like Google Cloud and Coinbase, who serve as node operators.

Kannan’s vision extends far beyond restaking. “Crypto is our coordination superhighway,” he says. “Blockchains are commitment engines. They allow you to make and keep commitments.”

He thinks in terms of volume, variety, and verifiability. How many commitments can humanity make and keep? How diverse can those commitments be? How easily can we verify them?

“It’s a crazy, 100-year project,” Kannan says. “And it upgrades the human species.”

The protocol launched EigenDA, a data availability system designed to handle the throughput of all blockchains combined. The team introduced intersubjectivity, a governance mechanism for resolving disputes that can’t be verified purely on-chain.

But Kannan acknowledges the work is far from done. “It’s not done unless you can run education on chain, unless you can run healthcare on chain. We’re nowhere near done.”

His approach to building combines top-down vision with bottom-up execution. You need to know where the hill is. But you also need to find gradients that lead there from where you stand today.

“If you can’t do anything today with your long-term vision, then it’s no good either,” he explains.

The verifiable cloud is EigenLayer’s next frontier. Traditional cloud services require trusting Amazon, Google, or Microsoft. Kannan’s version lets anyone run cloud services — storage, computing, AI inference — with cryptographic proof they’re executing correctly. Validators stake money on their honesty. Bad actors lose their stake.

At 40-something, Kannan maintains his position as an affiliate professor at the University of Washington while running Eigen Labs. He still publishes research. Still thinks in terms of information theory and distributed systems.

But he’s no longer just the academic who couldn’t answer Caltech’s 30-year question. He’s answered it three times now - genomics, then blockchains, then coordination engines. Each answer built on lessons from the previous attempt.

The buffalo has been moved. The car is in motion. The building is beginning to shift. Whether he’ll eventually move Earth remains to be seen. But Kannan has figured out something many academics never learn: the path to solving big problems starts with solving small ones, and earning the leverage to go bigger.

This kid looks like he could’ still be in high school.

Lowell Winer, Boost’s head of business development, had no idea who Altman was when he received the call that morning. The young CEO of a tiny startup called Loopt urgently requested a meeting. Boost was days away from signing a contract with another company for a location-based mobile feature.

But Altman had stayed up all night building a crude version of his app to run on Boost’s network. He hopped on the first flight out. Within 30 minutes of walking into that conference room, he had convinced them to abandon the existing deal and sign with his company instead.

Today, at 40, he runs OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and arguably the most influential AI research organisation in the world. The decisions he makes at OpenAI shape how millions of people currently interact with artificial intelligence.

But the path from that Boost Mobile meeting to leading the AI revolution wasn’t smooth. Altman has been fired from companies he founded, faced accusations of dishonesty from former allies and survived a boardroom coup that nearly destroyed OpenAI.

The question at the heart of Altman’s rise is whether we can trust someone this hungry for power to oversee technology that could reshape civilisation. To answer that, we need to know his journey.

The Kid Who Learned to Code at Eight

Sam Altman was born on April 22, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois, to a Jewish family that soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri. His mother worked as a dermatologist, and his father was a real estate broker. Sam was the oldest of four siblings in what appeared to be a stable, middle-class household.

At the age of eight, he received his first computer, an Apple Macintosh. He quickly learned to program and took apart hardware, trying to understand how everything worked at a fundamental level.

The Macintosh was more than a hobby. Growing up gay in the conservative Midwest during the 1990s, Altman found refuge in technology. The computer didn’t judge. It simply responded to logic and skill.

At John Burroughs School, a prestigious private institution in St. Louis, Altman stood out as a talented debater and student leader. In what must have taken considerable courage, he stood up during a school assembly and announced he was gay. When some students wanted to boycott an assembly about homosexuality on religious grounds, Altman confronted them publicly.

His English teacher, Andy Abbott, remembers young Sam as exceptional at everything he tried. “Everyone knew this guy was better at most things than most of us are,” Abbott says. He seemed to overflow with self-confidence, even as a teenager.

Abbott hoped Altman would become an author rather than going into technology. “I remember thinking — and this is an embarrassing confession — I hope he doesn’t go into technology. He’s so creative.”

But Altman had his sight set on Silicon Valley. In 2003, he enrolled at Stanford University to study computer science, following the well-worn path of many tech entrepreneurs. The Valley was entering a new boom cycle after the dot-com bust.

Two years into his studies, Altman dropped out of Stanford. He had an idea.

What if your phone could tell you when friends were nearby? In 2005, before the iPhone existed, Loopt aimed to use GPS coordinates to connect users with people in their social network. The problem was the technology barely existed yet.

Altman applied to Y Combinator’s first batch in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Paul Graham and Jessica Livingston, who ran YC, were immediately struck by Altman’s maturity. Graham later wrote that within three minutes of meeting him, he thought: “Ah, so this is what Bill Gates must have been like when he was 19.”

For three months, Altman huddled with seven other young founders in Graham’s home, trying to build businesses that were at least “ramen profitable”, making enough money for the founders to survive on instant noodles. The early YC batch would eventually produce notable companies like Reddit and Twitch, but Altman stood out from day one.

In 2007, Altman appeared on stage with Steve Jobs at Apple’s developers conference, demonstrating Loopt on the newly launched iPhone. For the occasion, he wore two polo shirts layered one over the other. Hot pink on top with a lime green collar underneath. The fashion choice was questionable, and would later become the subject tech memes.

Graham praised Altman repeatedly on his influential blog during this period, describing him as having “such force of will that he’s going to get whatever they want.”

In 2009, when Graham invested in Stripe, he invited Altman into the round. Altman wrote a $15,000 check for 2% of the company.

But Loopt itself was fizzling. Despite raising over $30 million in venture capital, the app never found product-market fit. In 2012, Altman sold the company to Green Dot Corporation for $43.4 million, which was not much more than investors had put in. By Silicon Valley standards, this qualified as a failure.

However, Altman failed upward. In 2014, when Graham wanted to step down from Y Combinator, he considered only one candidate to replace him.

At 29, Altman became president of Y Combinator. His strategy was aggressive expansion. YC dramatically increased the number of startups accepted and raised $700 million to invest in alumni companies. He launched a universal basic income experiment in Oakland, distributing regular payments with no strings attached.

Mark Andreessen, a venture capital titan, said that under Altman, “the level of YC’s ambition has gone up 10 times.” By the time Altman stepped down, YC’s portfolio had grown to a combined valuation over $100 billion.

The OpenAI Gambit

In late 2015, while still running Y Combinator, Altman assembled a group of Silicon Valley’s most successful people to launch OpenAI. Their pitch was that they would build artificial intelligence to benefit humanity.

The backers, including Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, and Graham, pledged $1 billion to fund what was structured as a nonprofit research lab.

The problem was talent. Google controlled about 75% of the world’s top AI researchers. So Altman and Musk organised a private dinner and invited the best AI experts they could recruit. They made a list of the ten researchers they most wanted and managed to hire nine of them.

For several years, OpenAI operated quietly as a research organisation. But Altman saw that it needed to evolve. In 2019, he stepped down from Y Combinator to become OpenAI’s full-time CEO. The organisation restructured, creating a “capped-profit” subsidiary that could attract investment while theoretically maintaining its nonprofit mission.

This structural change later became controversial, with critics arguing it betrayed OpenAI’s founding principles. But for Altman, it was a pragmatic necessity. Advanced AI research required massive computing resources, which required massive funding.

The breakthrough came in 2020 with GPT-3, a language model that could generate human-like text, translate languages, and summarise complex documents. Then came DALL-E, which could generate images from text descriptions. These tools impressed AI researchers but were still largely academic curiosities.

Everything changed with ChatGPT.

In late 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public. The reception was unlike anything Silicon Valley had seen. The chatbot reached 100 million users in less than two months, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Faster than Facebook, Google, Instagram, TikTok, faster than anything else.

The success shocked even Altman. According to Greg Brockman, most engineers including Brockman himself had opposed building a simple chatbot. They thought it wasn’t worth the time. Altman overruled them. His intuition proved correct.

ChatGPT demonstrated that AI had moved from research labs into practical applications anyone could use. The success thrust Altman into the global spotlight. He testified before Congress about AI regulation and became one of Time’s most influential people in 2023.

But with visibility came scrutiny. And in November 2023, that scrutiny exploded into crisis.

Five Days in November

On Friday, November 17, 2023, OpenAI’s board abruptly fired Altman as CEO. The board’s statement cited that Altman had been “not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.”

Within hours, hundreds of OpenAI employees signed an open letter, threatening to resign and follow Altman to Microsoft, which had offered him a position to lead a new AI research division.

The crisis revealed deep tensions within OpenAI regarding its mission and direction. Board members including co-founder Ilya Sutskever and academics Helen Toner and Tasha McCauley felt the company had diverged too far from its nonprofit mission. OpenAI’s recent developer conference, where Altman had announced multiple commercial products, appeared to be the final straw.

Toner had even published a paper criticising OpenAI’s safety measures and praising competitor Anthropic. She reportedly said at one point that shutting OpenAI down might be the best way to fullfill their mission of protecting society.

For five days, the tech world watched a boardroom drama unfold in real-time. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella worked behind the scenes to mediate. Major investors pushed for Altman’s return. The board briefly hired Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as interim CEO, only to reverse course.

On November 22, Altman returned as CEO. The board that had fired him resigned. A new board with experienced tech executives took over, including former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.

Then came the Elon Musk war.

Perhaps the most complex relationship in Altman’s career has been with Elon Musk. The two co-founded OpenAI with a shared vision for the safe development of AI. However, the partnership deteriorated as OpenAI evolved from a purely nonprofit to a hybrid structure.

Musk stepped down from OpenAI’s board in 2018, citing conflicts of interest with Tesla’s own AI work. But he grew increasingly critical of OpenAI’s direction, arguing the organisation had abandoned its founding principles.

In 2024, Musk filed two separate lawsuits against Altman and OpenAI, alleging fraud, breach of contract, and prioritising commercial interests over safety. He began publicly calling Altman “Scam Altman” on X (formerly Twitter) and launched xAI, a direct competitor to OpenAI.

The legal battles continue. Musk argues for more transparency and open-source development, while Altman contends that commercial viability is necessary to fund the massive investments required for advanced AI research.

The Controversial Identity Project

When he returned, the monthly salary of $80 would be gone. Lost to alcohol and gambling debts.

The family lived in the settlements along Delhi’s Yamuna River, an area locals dismissively called “Jamna-Paar,” which roughly translates to “the other side.” It wasn’t a compliment.

Young Sandeep would stand outside his classroom, unable to enter because his parents hadn’t paid the school fees. He was 10 years old when his younger brother had a serious accident, and his childhood effectively ended. His father’s addictions meant someone had to step up. That someone was Sandeep.

Today, Nailwal runs Polygon, a blockchain infrastructure company that processes millions of transactions daily and has partnered with JPMorgan, Stripe, and Disney. The journey to building technology used by Fortune 500 companies spans just three decades.

But the path wasn’t linear, and the scars from those early years shaped every decision he made.

Sandeep Nailwal was born in 1987 in Ramnagar, a farming village in the Himalayan foothills with no electricity. His parents, both illiterate teenagers when they married, moved to Delhi when he was four, searching for opportunities that didn’t exist in their village.

They found the slums instead.

The settlements on the eastern banks of the Yamuna River were crowded, dirty, and violent. Illegal guns and knives as the preferred tools for settling disputes. His family squeezed into whatever housing they could afford, moving constantly as circumstances changed.

His parents didn’t understand how education worked. They didn’t know children could start school at age three or four. Sandeep didn’t begin attending until he was five, simply because nobody told his parents otherwise. This late start meant he was always the oldest kid in his class by two years, which was a constant reminder that he was behind.

The trauma of poverty wasn’t just about missing meals or shabby clothes. It was about the shame of standing outside the classroom when your father gambled away the school fees. It was about watching your mother struggle with an alcoholic husband while trying to keep the family fed.

It was about understanding, at an impossibly young age, that nobody was coming to save you.

The Entrepreneur at Sixth Grade

Sandeep’s response to poverty was work. In sixth grade, he started tutoring younger students, earning Rs 300 per month. He also found a friend who owned a pen shop and started buying pens at cost, then selling them to classmates at a markup.

The amounts were tiny. The lesson was huge: you could create value, capture some of it, and use that money to change your circumstances.

He dreamed of attending the Indian Institutes of Technology, the prestigious engineering schools that serve as a ticket out of poverty for ambitious students. But IIT required expensive coaching to compete against a million other applicants for 5,000 spots. His family couldn’t afford it.

Instead, Nailwal enrolled at Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology, a second-tier engineering school. He took out student loans to pay for his education. Sometimes he used that loan money to pay off his father’s gambling debts instead of buying textbooks or a computer.

The decision to study computer science came from watching Mark Zuckerberg on Indian television. Facebook was getting hyped globally, and young Sandeep thought: “I want to build my own Facebook.”

He admits now it was naive. But naivety combined with desperation creates a particular kind of determination.

After finishing his engineering degree, Nailwal pursued an MBA at the National Institute of Industrial Engineering in Mumbai. There he met Harshita Singh, who became his wife later. After graduating, he quickly repaid both his own student loans and his father’s debts working as a consultant at Deloitte.

Nailwal moved through several corporate positions. Software developer at Computer Sciences Corporation, consultant at Deloitte, Chief Technology Officer at Welspun Group’s e-commerce division. He was good at his job. He got promoted. He made decent money.

But he couldn’t shake the entrepreneurial itch.

In Indian culture, there’s pressure to buy a house before marriage. A man without property is a man without prospects. Nailwal felt this pressure acutely. He had a good job. He could get a home loan. He could settle down.

Harshita told him something that changed everything: “You will never be happy this way. I don’t care about my own house. We can stay and rent.”

In early 2016, Nailwal quit his job. He borrowed $15,000, which is the money he’d planned to use for a wedding someday and started Scope Weaver, an online marketplace for professional services. The idea was to standardise India’s fragmented services industry, creating something like Alibaba but for Indian service providers instead of Chinese manufacturers.

The company did okay. It generated revenue. But Nailwal realised he was becoming a bottleneck. Clients wanted a face, someone to blame when things went wrong. He was turning into just another service provider, except now he had employees to pay.

The business wasn’t scalable. After a year, he started looking for his next move.

The $800 Bitcoin Bet

Nailwal first heard about Bitcoin in 2010. A friend suggested they mine it together. Nailwal didn’t have a laptop. The conversation ended there.

He encountered Bitcoin again in 2013 while pursuing his MBA. This time he set up a miner, but his laptop was too weak. He tried reading about Bitcoin, got through two paragraphs, saw “not backed by anything,” and concluded it was a scam. He walked away.

In 2016, Bitcoin resurfaced. Nailwal was exploring “deep tech” opportunities after realising Scope Weaver wouldn’t become the business he’d envisioned. He considered AI but found mathematics beyond his current abilities.

Then he read the Bitcoin white paper. Really read it this time.

“Oh, this is big,” he thought. “This is the next revolution of humanity.”

Either conviction or recklessness, depending on your perspective, Nailwal took the $15,000 he’d borrowed for a wedding and put it all into Bitcoin at $800 per coin.

He admits:

“The level of FOMO I had, it would have been exactly the same if I was one year late. I would have done the same thing at $20,000, and I would have lost all that money.”

But he didn’t lose it. Bitcoin rose. More importantly, Nailwal discovered Ethereum and its programmable smart contracts. This was a new computing platform that could run applications without central control.

He was hooked.

In 2017, Nailwal met Jaynti Kanani through online Ethereum communities. Kanani proposed solving Ethereum’s scaling problems. The network was choking on its own success. CryptoKitties had caused transaction fees to spike 600%.

Kanani and Nailwal, joined by co-founders Anurag Arjun and Mihailo Bjelic, started working on Matic Network in early 2018. They raised $30,000 in seed funding. Their plan was build a working product first, then raise money through an ICO.

This principled approach nearly killed them. By the time they had a working testnet, the crypto market had crashed. Nobody wanted to fund projects, especially ones from India. Two recent Indian crypto projects had been exit scams.

“Nobody believed that there could be a protocol coming from Indian co-founders,” Nailwal recalls.

The team survived on $165,000 total for their first two years. Founders took salaries of a few thousand dollars per month. Multiple times, they came within three months of running out of money. Nailwal remembers begging other crypto founders for $50,000 just to keep going another quarter.

The low point came right before his wedding in 2018. A Chinese fund had committed to investing $500,000. Two days before his wedding, Bitcoin crashed from $6,000 to $3,000. The Chinese fund called: “We were going to invest 100 BTC. Now the value is half, so we are not investing.” Worse, Matic’s treasury was in Bitcoin. It had also lost half its value.

His wedding went ahead. Friends celebrated. But Nailwal knew they might not have a company in three months.

In early 2019, Binance approved Matic for a $5.6 million raise through its Launchpad program. The due diligence had taken eight months. The raise gave Matic breathing room. But acceptance remained elusive. The team attended countless hackathons, visiting developer desks one by one, explaining their technology.

Originally launched as Matic Network, it was a single-chain scaling solution that operated as a sidechain and combined Plasma and Proof-of-Stake mechanisms. In 2021, Matic Network underwent a major rebranding to Polygon, reflecting a shift from a single chain to a broader multi-chain ecosystem aimed at providing diverse scaling solutions across Ethereum-compatible chains.

Market responded to the rebranding. Polygon’s market cap surged from $87 million at the start of 2021 to nearly $19 billion by December.

Developers migrated to Matic, and the total value locked on the network climbed to $10 billion at its peak.

Alongside this, the native token also transitioned from $MATIC, which secured the original Polygon PoS chain, to $POL, which is designed to support the whole Polygon ecosystem, especially with upcoming upgrades such as the Staking Hub that aim to consolidate and enhance security and governance across multiple chains. This token migration was a critical step, although it caused some temporary uncertainty among holders and liquidity fragmentation during the transition period.

Polygon Labs also made a bold strategic pivot towards Zero-Knowledge (ZK) rollups, acquiring key ZK-focused teams to develop zkEVM, which enables Ethereum-equivalent execution with the scalability advantages of ZK proofs. While optimistic rollups (ORs) initially gained traction due to simpler design and earlier launches, Polygon’s emphasis on ZK rollups represents a long-term bet on the ultimate layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum. The zkEVM technology aims to combine high security, scalability, and full compatibility with Ethereum’s existing tooling, potentially enabling Polygon to lead in the future multi-chain architecture.

The COVID Pivot

In April 2021, COVID-19’s second wave devastated India. Hospitals overflowed. Oxygen supplies ran short. Nailwal’s family in India all contracted COVID. He was in Dubai, helpless.

“At that point in time, it was very clear that our family will not be 100%,” he says. “Not everyone will survive.”

He tweeted that he couldn’t take the crisis lying down. He set up a crypto multisig wallet for donations, expecting maybe $5 million total. Within days, donations reached $10 million. Then Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin donated $1 billion worth of Shiba Inu tokens.

The practical challenge was: how do you liquidate a billion-dollar meme coin position without crashing the market?

Nailwal worked with market makers to slowly sell over several months. The Shiba Inu community, initially panicked about a massive sell-off, calmed down after Nailwal promised careful execution. In the end, he netted $474 million, far more than Buterin had expected.

The Crypto Covid Relief Fund deployed $74 million in India during the emergency. Nailwal returned $200 million to Buterin, who donated it to U.S. biomedical research. And the remaining $200 million was kept for Blockchain for Impact’s long-term initiatives.

Building Character Through Adversity

By mid-2025, Polygon faced new challenges. $POL had fallen more than 80% from its peak. Competing layer-2 solutions from Arbitrum and Optimism were capturing market share. The company had grown to 600 employees during the boom, creating cultural problems and organisational bloat.

Nailwal made hard decisions. Two rounds of layoffs cut staff back to a more cohesive team. Multiple projects that had consumed months of engineering time got scrapped when they no longer fit the strategy.

In June 2025, Nailwal took over as Polygon Foundation’s first CEO, consolidating leadership that had been distributed across co-founders and board members. Three of his four co-founders had stepped away from active roles. He was the last one left.

“When push comes to shove, most founders are not able to take those hard decisions,” he said in one of the interviews, “Doing the GTM in a hard way, firing people who are not fitting the current strategy, scrapping projects where they have invested a lot of time and emotional resources.”

Those decisions feel different when you’re cutting projects you personally championed or letting go of people who believed in your vision during the hard times.

Under Nailwal’s sole leadership, Polygon refocused on AggLayer, an interoperability protocol designed to unify blockchain networks. The technical vision is to create infrastructure that makes thousands of separate blockchains feel like a single, seamless network to end users.

“By 2030, you will probably have between 100,000 to a million chains,” Nailwal predicts. “All the activity will move to these app chains.”

It’s a bold claim. Whether it proves correct depends on execution over the next several years.

The Long Game

Nailwal thinks in decades, not quarters. When discussing Polygon’s competition or DePIN’s future, he constantly references 10-year and 50-year timelines.

“If you gave me 10 years, I can 100% tell you that this is the endgame architecture of how crypto becomes mass market,” he says about AggLayer. “But whether it’s Polygon’s version or somebody else comes in and builds something like this, that nobody can predict.”

He believes deeply in this vision for blockchain infrastructure. Whether Polygon executes it or someone else does matters less than seeing it built.

“If you gave me 10 years, I can 100% tell you that this is the endgame architecture of how crypto becomes mass market. But whether it’s Polygon’s version or somebody else comes in and builds something like this, that nobody can predict or some other project builds this and it will be great but I am more committed to this architecture like whoever builds it I would love to you know cheer them from the sides also uh as far as it is like uh web3 to aligned and ethical team I would love to support them.”

With Blockchain for Impact, he’s shifting from emergency relief toward “inspirational” philanthropy. He’s planning something like a Nobel Prize of India to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

“I want to get like $2 trillion output from this $200 million BFI,” he explains, describing leverage ratios that sound absurd until you remember he turned $30,000 in seed funding into a company that briefly hit $30 billion in market cap.

Yet Polygon faces headwinds. Competitors like Arbitrum and Base have captured more market share, offering simpler user experiences and stronger backing. Polygon’s bridge remains technically complex, and its transition from MATIC to POL has created uncertainty. The company’s developer-focused messaging hasn’t translated to mass retail adoption the way rivals have achieved. Whether Nailwal’s long-term infrastructure bet pays off depends on execution in an increasingly crowded market.

What’s already certain is that Sandeep Nailwal traveled further from his starting point than most people can imagine. Yet to see whether the infrastructure he’s building will lift others the way crypto lifted him.

From a village with no electricity to building the internet of value. The destination remains uncertain. The journey continues.

Prediction markets are pricing in a presidential pardon. My X timeline is buzzing with theories about the founder's imminent return. Everyone has an opinion about whether Changpeng Zhao would reclaim his throne at the world's largest crypto exchange.

But while the internet is obsessed over CZ's digital breadcrumbs, there was a man quietly running Binance, steering the company through the most dangerous period in its history.

We noticed it. Now it’s time to tell his story.

Richard Teng has quietly transformed Binance from a compliance nightmare into one of the most regulated crypto exchange. He took over during the company's darkest hour, facing $4.3 billion in fines, regulatory fury, and existential questions about its survival.

Eighteen months later, Binance boasts more users, more licenses, and more institutional partnerships than ever before.

The 52-year-old former regulator insists he's focused on the future, not the past. But his position is more precarious than it appears. The choices he's made to legitimise Binance may have come at the cost of what made it revolutionary in the first place.

Richard Teng's journey into crypto began in the most establishment place possible: a Singapore government office. After graduating with first-class honors in accounting from Nanyang Technological University in 1994, he spent 13 years as a regulator at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Teng comes from humble beginnings. His mother worked at an assisted living facility, and details about his father are notably absent from public records. The government job offered security and prestige that his family background hadn't provided.

At MAS, Teng learned the machinery of financial regulation. He helped shape Singapore's transformation into a global financial hub, writing the rules that banks had to follow. He investigated firms that broke them. Teng believed that smart rules could enable innovation rather than stifle it.

His big break came in 2015, when he moved to Abu Dhabi to run the Financial Services Regulatory Authority at Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). It was there, in 2017, that he encountered cryptocurrency and made a decision that would define his career. Instead of banning digital assets, he would try to regulate them properly.

ADGM became one of the first financial centres to create comprehensive crypto rules. The framework attracted dozens of crypto companies and established Teng's reputation as a progressive regulator. But it also marked his transition from rule-maker to rule-breaker. By 2021, Teng had crossed the line, joining Binance as CEO of its Singapore operations.

Here was a man who had spent decades enforcing financial regulations, now working for an exchange that seemed to ignore them entirely.

When CZ tapped Teng to lead Binance Singapore in 2021, it looked like a strategic hire. The exchange was facing regulatory pressure globally, and Teng's credentials could help smooth things over with authorities. But Teng's rise within Binance was faster than anyone expected. Within two years, he had gone from running a single country operation to overseeing regional markets across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. By late 2023, he was widely viewed as CZ's likely successor.

Still, few expected the transition to happen so abruptly. On November 21, 2023, CZ announced his resignation as part of a plea deal with U.S. authorities. Teng was named CEO immediately, inheriting a company in crisis.

Binance faced the largest financial penalty in Treasury Department history. Regulators in multiple countries were investigating or banning the exchange. Users were withdrawing funds, worried about the platform's stability.

Teng had to act fast.

The Compliance Revolution (Or Capitulation?)

Teng's first priority was obvious: fix Binance's relationship with regulators.

Under CZ, the exchange operated with minimal oversight, often treating compliance as an afterthought. Teng flipped that script entirely.

He hired hundreds of compliance officers, established the company's first formal board of directors and invested "hundreds of millions of dollars" in risk management systems. He began working with regulators, rather than fighting them.

The results have been impressive. Binance now holds regulatory licenses in 21 jurisdictions—more than any other crypto exchange. Major institutions that once avoided the platform are now eager to partner with it.

However, critics argue that Teng has overcorrected. In his zeal to appease regulators, they claim, he has stripped away much of what made Binance innovative and competitive.

The exchange now takes months to list new tokens, compared to the rapid-fire launches of the CZ era. Its compliance processes are so stringent that some projects choose to launch on other platforms instead. The startup that once moved fast and broke things now moves slowly and follows rules.

Teng disputes this characterisation, arguing that compliance is necessary for mainstream adoption.

His words:

“We paid a heavy price for it and we hope that other players in this space will learn from our lesson,” …“The whole industry can do much better working together to keep out the bad actors.”

Perhaps Teng's biggest challenge isn't regulatory pressure or user complaints. It's the ghost of his predecessor. CZ remains Binance's largest shareholder and could theoretically return to an operational role if his legal issues are resolved.

This creates an awkward dynamic. Teng is technically the CEO, but everyone knows he serves at the pleasure of someone who isn't even officially involved in the company anymore. Major strategic decisions still require CZ's blessing, even if he's not supposed to be making them.

The situation became more complicated in early 2025 when CZ removed references to being Binance's "ex-CEO" from his social media profiles. Teng insists he's not worried about being replaced. But his position is inherently unstable. If CZ does return, what role would there be for the man who kept the lights on during his absence?

Despite the corporate intrigue, Teng has carved out his own identity as CEO. His signature issue is financial inclusion — using crypto to serve the billions of people excluded from traditional banking.

He frequently cites remittances as crypto's "killer app." Traditional money transfer services charge fees of 10% or more to send money across borders. With crypto, those transfers can happen instantly for almost nothing.

"In the last few years, especially where many countries have gone through hyperinflationary scenarios, by holding stablecoins, they are so much better off," Teng explains.

Binance Pay, the exchange's payment service, has processed over $230 billion across more than 300 million transactions as of mid 2025. Teng estimates it has saved users more than $1.75 billion compared to traditional remittance services.

The focus on practical utility rather than speculative trading represents a shift from the CZ era. While his predecessor courted day traders and yield farmers, Teng is targeting the global poor and unbanked. It's a noble mission, but it also raises questions about priorities. Should the world's largest crypto exchange focus on serving sophisticated traders who generate most of its revenue, or on providing basic financial services to people who may never trade at all?

Teng's biggest bet has been on institutional adoption. Under his leadership, Binance has aggressively courted hedge funds, family offices, and traditional financial institutions.

But this institutional focus comes with trade-offs. Professional investors expect the same level of service and protection they get from traditional financial institutions. They want segregated custody, insurance coverage, and regulatory compliance. All of these are expensive and complex to provide.

Teng argues that institutional adoption will benefit everyone by bringing legitimacy and stability to crypto markets. But the jury is still out on whether that trade-off is worth it.

Running the world's largest crypto exchange means being the world's biggest target for hackers. In January 2025, rival exchange Bybit lost $1.5 billion to sophisticated attackers, which was a stark reminder of the risks facing crypto platforms.

Teng has made security a cornerstone of his leadership, investing "hundreds of millions of dollars" in defensive systems. Binance maintains a $1 billion insurance fund and publishes regular "proof of reserve" reports.

But some security experts question whether these measures are sufficient. The insurance fund, while large, would only cover a fraction of Binance's user deposits. The proof of reserve reports, while transparent, don't prevent inside jobs or sophisticated attacks.

The Meme Coin Dilemma

One area where Teng has struggled to find balance is token listings. Binance's decisions about which tokens to support can make projects worth billions overnight, creating huge pressure on the exchange.

The situation worsened with the explosion of meme coins and speculative tokens. Millions of new tokens launch every month, most with no real use or long-term future. Users want access to the latest trends, but regulators want consumer protection.

Teng has tried to handle this through community voting and stricter research. But the approach has created new problems. The listing process has become so lengthy and expensive that even legitimate projects are struggling to get on the platform.

Some industry observers point to cases where major projects with significant funding have spent over a year in Binance's due diligence process, only to receive listing offers that require giving up substantial portions of their token supply. These equity-like demands can cost projects tens of millions of dollars just for exchange access.

But Teng's team argues that the strict requirements are necessary to protect users from projects that might dump tokens and disappear. The tension reflects a deeper challenge: how do you balance protecting retail investors from scams while still giving legitimate projects reasonable access to markets?

The Road Ahead (And Behind)

As Teng approaches his second year as CEO, his report card is mixed. He has undoubtedly stabilised Binance and restored its relationship with regulators. User growth continues, and the exchange maintains its dominant market position.

The crypto industry values bold leadership and risk-taking qualities that regulatory compliance tends to discourage. Teng's cautious approach may work for now, but it may not be sustainable in a fast-moving industry.

The CZ factor adds another layer of uncertainty. If the founder does return, would Teng stay on in a subordinate role? Would he be pushed out entirely? Or would he finally get the chance to build his own legacy without living in someone else's shadow?

Teng faces a critical question about Binance's identity. Is it a crypto-native platform that happens to follow regulations, or is it a traditional financial institution that happens to trade digital assets?

His answer to that question will determine not just his own fate, but the future of the world's most important crypto exchange.

Elizabeth Stark was watching her company's biggest product launch crumble in real time. Lightning Labs had spent years building "Taro," a protocol that would let people send stablecoins over Bitcoin's Lightning Network. The technology worked. The community was excited. Major partners were lined up.

Then a judge issued a temporary injunction. Tari Labs claimed they owned the "Taro" trademark. Lightning Labs had to stop using the name immediately. No more development announcements or marketing.

The rebrand to "Taproot Assets" took weeks of scrambling. Months of momentum vanished overnight; partners had to explain the name change to confused customers. Some questioned whether Lightning Labs had done proper trademark research before launching such a major initiative.

But Stark pushed forward anyway. The technology continued to develop under its new name, even as competitors gained ground during the forced pause.

She's built one of Bitcoin's most important infrastructure companies. Stark's work is aiming to reshape how Bitcoin functions, but the jury's still out on whether her vision will actually work at a global scale.

Before Elizabeth Stark built Bitcoin infrastructure, she learnt how to fight much bigger opponents than trademark holders.

Harvard Law School, 2011. Stark was organising a grassroots campaign to kill two bills moving through Congress with bipartisan support.

SOPA and PIPA would let copyright holders force websites offline for alleged infringement.

What are they?

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) were proposed US laws aimed at fighting online piracy by letting copyright owners force websites accused of infringement offline. The bills would have allowed blocking a website’s access to advertising, payment processing, and search engines. This could have shut down sites even outside the US jurisdiction. Many feared the laws would lead to widespread internet censorship, harming legal websites and free speech.

Social media platforms, search engines, and user-generated content sites would face constant legal threats. Most tech companies were too scared to oppose the legislation directly, worried about antagonising lawmakers.

Stark co-founded the Harvard Free Culture Group and helped coordinate protests across campuses. The message was that these bills would break the internet by making platforms liable for user content they couldn't possibly monitor.

"This wasn't Google v Hollywood," she explains. "This was 15 million internet users v Hollywood."

Wikipedia blacked out for 24 hours. Reddit shut down. Protesters flooded congressional phone lines. Within days, lawmakers backed away from the bills. SOPA and PIPA died in committee.

The campaign taught Stark that sometimes you couldn't beat institutions through traditional channels, but you could make their preferred solutions politically impossible.

During law school, she also founded the Open Video Alliance and produced the inaugural Open Video Conference. The first event drew 9,000 participants, proving demand existed for alternatives to traditional media gatekeepers. But organising conferences and fighting bad legislation felt reactive. After graduating, Stark took academic positions at Stanford and Yale, teaching how the internet was reshaping society and economics. She researched digital rights and worked with policy organisations to develop better frameworks around emerging technologies.

Policy solutions always played catch-up to technological change. By the time lawmakers understood new technologies well enough to regulate them properly, those technologies had evolved into something else entirely.

What if you could build technologies that were resistant to bad regulation from the start?

The Bitcoin Wars

In 2015, the Bitcoin community was fighting over its future.

The "blocksize wars" had been raging for months. Bitcoin could only process about seven transactions per second, nowhere near enough to compete with traditional payment networks. One faction wanted bigger blocks to fit more transactions. Another preferred to keep blocks small to maintain decentralisation.

The debate was existential. Would Bitcoin remain decentralised, or become controlled by mining operations and corporate interests?

Elizabeth Stark watched the fight with fascination. She'd seen similar battles in internet governance, where technical decisions had political implications. But Bitcoin was different. No central authority could impose solutions. The community had to reach consensus through code and economic incentives.

As the debate intensified, developers proposed a different approach: build a second layer on top of Bitcoin that could handle millions of transactions per second while preserving the base layer's security.

The Lightning Network.

Instead of recording every transaction on Bitcoin's blockchain, users could open payment channels and settle multiple transactions off-chain. Only opening and closing channels would require blockchain transactions.

These channels could link together. If Alice had a channel with Bob, and Bob had one with Carol, Alice could pay Carol by routing through Bob. The network would become an interconnected payment channel processing instant, low-fee transactions.

Stark saw the potential, but also the challenges. Lightning was still theoretical. The technology required complex cryptographic protocols that hadn't been tested at scale. Most Bitcoin users didn't understand why they needed second-layer solutions.

In 2016, she co-founded Lightning Labs with programmer Olaoluwa Osuntokun. The timing was risky, but Stark had learned from activism that the best time to build alternatives was before everyone realised they needed them.

Building Infrastructure

Lightning Labs shipped the first Lightning Network beta in 2018. The software was rough; channels failed regularly, liquidity management was confusing, and most wallets couldn't integrate the technology properly.

But it worked. Users could open channels, make instant payments, and close channels without waiting for blockchain confirmations. The early adopters were mostly developers who understood the technology's potential.

Stark wanted to serve billions of people without reliable financial services. Her team focused on practical problems real users faced.

How do you manage channel liquidity so payments don't fail? Lightning Loop let users move funds between channels and the blockchain without closing channels, solving some liquidity problems but not all of them.

How do you create markets for liquidity? Lightning Pool built a marketplace where people could buy and sell channel capacity, though adoption remained limited to sophisticated users.

How do you run Lightning on mobile without killing battery life? Neutrino enabled privacy-preserving light clients, but the technology was still too complex for mainstream apps.

Each product tackled specific infrastructure pieces. Progress was slow; Lightning remained difficult to use for non-technical people. Channel management required constant attention. Payments failed regularly when routing couldn't find paths with sufficient liquidity.

But the foundation was getting stronger. Major wallets started integrating Lightning. Payment processors began offering Lightning services. The network grew from dozens of nodes to thousands, though most of the capacity concentrated in a few large hubs.

Critics pointed out that Lightning's hub-and-spoke topology wasn't as decentralised as advertised. They questioned whether the technology could scale without becoming controlled by major payment processors. Stark acknowledged these concerns but argued that Lightning was still early; better solutions would emerge as the technology matured.

The Stablecoin Bet

By 2022, stablecoin volume was exploding. Tether and USDC were processing over $1 trillion annually, more than many traditional payment networks. But most stablecoins ran on Ethereum and other blockchain networks that weren't as secure as Bitcoin.

Stark saw an opportunity. Lightning Labs raised $70 million to build what became Taproot Assets, a protocol for issuing and transferring stablecoins on Bitcoin. The technology used Bitcoin's Taproot upgrade to embed asset data in regular transactions, making stablecoin transfers look like normal Bitcoin payments.

These assets could move over Lightning Network. Users could send dollars, euros, or other assets instantly while benefiting from Bitcoin's security. Every stablecoin transaction would route through Bitcoin liquidity, potentially increasing demand for Bitcoin and generating fees for node operators.

"We want to bitcoinise the dollar," Stark explained, though whether people actually wanted their dollars bitcoinised remained unclear.

Why? While the technology enables dollar-denominated stablecoins on Bitcoin, the broad user base for stablecoins largely remains on Ethereum and other more mature ecosystems where infrastructure, liquidity, and developer activity are deeper, making Bitcoin stablecoins still niche.

Bitcoin maximalists sometimes question adding non-Bitcoin assets on Bitcoin, reflecting ideological hesitancy or preference to maintain Bitcoin as pure “digital gold” rather than a multi-asset settlement layer.

Users in emerging and inflationary markets desire stablecoins for stability, but adoption on Bitcoin Lightning requires overcoming complexity, liquidity, and user experience barriers compared to established stablecoin rails. The market is still determining product-market fit for stablecoins on Lightning, so demand to "bitcoinise the dollar" at scale is aspirational but not certain yet.

However, the trademark dispute forced the “Taro” rebrand, but development continued. By 2024, Lightning Labs had shipped Taproot Assets and begun processing real stablecoin transactions. Bridge services moved USDT from Ethereum to Bitcoin's Lightning Network; users could send dollars for pennies.

But adoption was limited. Most stablecoin users stayed on Ethereum where the ecosystem was more developed. Bitcoin maximalists questioned whether bringing other assets to Bitcoin was necessary or desirable. The technology worked, but product-market fit remained elusive.

The Network Effect Question

Today, Lightning Labs runs important Bitcoin infrastructure, by developing and maintaining LND (Lightning Network Daemon), the leading software implementation for the Lightning Network that powers the majority of Bitcoin’s layer-two payment channels. But Elizabeth Stark's bigger vision remains unproven. She describes building "the internet of money" where financial services operate globally without permission from governments or corporations.

The comparison to Internet protocols makes sense in theory. Just as anyone can build websites and applications on internet protocols, anyone could build financial services on Lightning protocols. The network would be open, interoperable, and censorship-resistant.

But networks are only valuable if people use them. Lightning adoption grows fastest in countries with unstable currencies or unreliable banking, but even there, uptake is measured in thousands rather than millions of users. Remittance companies experiment with Lightning, but most still use traditional rails for the bulk of their business.

Stark's team works on AI integration for autonomous payments, privacy improvements, and educational resources for developers. Each advancement is technically impressive, but mainstream adoption feels perpetually just around the corner.

"Bitcoin is a movement," Stark says. "Everyone here is part of building an entirely new financial system."

The movement exists, but its impact on everyday people remains limited. Lightning processes thousands of transactions per second in theory; in practice, most people still pay with credit cards and bank transfers. Whether Bitcoin payments will ever feel as natural as sending emails depends on solving user experience problems that have persisted for years.

But Lightning is still pretty far from the 'as easy as sending an email' vision that Stark talks about. Managing channel liquidity is like being your own bank's operations department — you need to constantly monitor whether you have enough money on both sides of your payment channels or transactions just fail. Payment routing can break when there isn't enough liquidity along the route, which happens more often than you'd want. Setting up Lightning is still the kind of thing that requires reading documentation and understanding concepts like 'inbound capacity.' Most people just want to tap a button and send money, not become amateur liquidity managers.

Lightning Labs has spent that $70 million on building Taproot Assets, improving their node software, and trying to convince developers to build Lightning applications. Taproot Assets is meant to let stablecoins and other tokens flow through Lightning channels, which could matter if people actually want to send stablecoins through Bitcoin infrastructure instead of just using existing stablecoin networks. They've also been working on making their LND software less terrible to use and trying to educate developers about why they should care about Lightning. Whether any of this leads to normal people actually using Lightning for normal payments is still an open question.

The technology works, but 'works' and 'works well enough for your mom to use it' are different things.

At fifteen, Chris Larsen learned that getting paid was harder than doing the work.

He ran an auto dent repair business from their driveway in San Francisco. Neighbours brought him their banged-up cars, and he'd pound out the dents with borrowed tools and teenage determination.

The work was honest. The prices were fair. But when customers didn't pay, fifteen-year-old Larsen learned his first brutal lesson about how financial systems really worked.

His father fixed aircraft engines at SFO for steady wages that arrived every two weeks. His mother drew illustrations for clients who sometimes paid months late, if at all. Both parents understood that money flowed easily to people who already had it, and grudgingly to everyone else.

The system was designed to work this way.

That frustration simmered for decades, driving him to build three companies worth billions of dollars. Each one attacked a different piece of the financial establishment that treated ordinary people like inconveniences rather than customers.

The Mechanic's Son Who Saw Through the System

1960. San Francisco.

Chris Larsen was born to parents who understood the value of steady work. Growing up in a working-class family meant experiencing the financial system from the customer side rather than the banking side. When his parents needed a car loan or mortgage, they dealt with bank officers who made decisions behind closed doors. The process was opaque, slow, and often unfair.

Why did some people have easy access to loans while others didn't? Why did banks charge different rates to different customers for identical services? Why did everything take so long when the actual decisions could be made in minutes?

These were personal frustrations that millions of families faced but few people in positions to change anything had experienced firsthand.

After high school, Larsen started studying aeronautics at San Jose State, following a practical path that might lead to steady engineering work. But the courses felt too narrow. He transferred to San Francisco State University, switching to international business and accounting.

After graduating in 1984, Larsen joined Chevron as a financial auditor. The job took him to Brazil, Ecuador, and Indonesia. This experience with global business operations provided him with firsthand knowledge of how international financial systems worked.

But he needed to understand the system better before he could change it.

In 1991, Larsen earned his MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. His professor Jim Collins taught him about building companies that could outlast their founders. The lessons stuck. Larsen wasn't interested in quick wins or trendy business models. He wanted to build infrastructure that would still matter decades later.

The Internet Meets Finance

1996. The dot-com boom was just beginning.

While most entrepreneurs were building websites for pet supplies or grocery delivery, Larsen saw a different opportunity. What if you could apply the internet to the most traditional industry of all: mortgages?

He co-founded E-Loan with Janina Pawlowski.

The concept? Put mortgage applications online so borrowers could shop for loans without dealing with brokers who added unnecessary fees.

Most financial institutions were still operating like it was 1976, not 1996. They required borrowers to visit branch offices, fill out paper forms, and wait weeks for approval decisions that could be made in minutes with the right software.

E-Loan's website launched in 1997, allowing borrowers to compare rates, submit applications, and track their progress online. The company eliminated broker commissions and reduced processing time from weeks to days.

But Larsen made a decision. E-Loan became the first company to provide consumers with free access to their FICO credit scores.

This was revolutionary. Banks and credit card companies had been using these scores for decades to make lending decisions, but consumers couldn't see their own numbers. The credit scoring system was a black box that determined whether you could buy a house or car, but you had no idea what was inside it. The move pressured the entire credit industry toward transparency. If borrowers could see their scores, they could understand why they were being offered certain rates and take steps to improve their creditworthiness.

E-Loan went public in 1999 during the height of the dot-com boom. At its peak, the company was valued at around $1 billion. But Larsen wasn't interested in riding bubbles. In 2005, he sold E-Loan to Banco Popular for $300 million.

E-Loan had succeeded because it automated processes that banks were doing manually. But not reimagine how they could work entirely?

Cutting Out the Banks

2005. Larsen was already thinking about his next target: the banks themselves.

What if ordinary people could lend money directly to other ordinary people, cutting banks out of the equation entirely?

He co-founded Prosper Marketplace with John Witchel. The first peer-to-peer lending marketplace in the United States.

The concept? Borrowers could post loan requests explaining what they needed money for and what interest rate they were willing to pay. Individual lenders could browse these requests and choose which loans to fund. The market would determine interest rates based on actual supply and demand rather than opaque bank formulas.

The platform democratised both sides of lending. People with good credit could earn better returns than they got from savings accounts. People with less-than-perfect credit could access loans that traditional banks wouldn't offer.

But Prosper faced a problem E-Loan hadn't encountered: regulatory uncertainty. Securities laws had been written decades before anyone imagined ordinary people lending money to strangers over the internet. In 2008, the SEC ruled that peer-to-peer loans were actually securities that required registration and disclosure. Many companies would have fought the regulators or tried to find loopholes. Larsen chose a different path.

Rather than fight the authorities, he worked with them. Prosper filed a prospectus with the SEC and changed its business model to comply with securities laws. The company survived the regulatory challenge and continued growing.

Because, you can't just build better technology. You have to help regulators understand why new rules might be necessary.

In 2012, Larsen stepped down as CEO of Prosper but remained chairman. He was already thinking about his next venture. Peer-to-peer lending had shown him that technology could disintermediate traditional finance. But the really ambitious target wasn't domestic lending.

It was international payments.

Building the Internet of Value

The idea that would become Ripple started with a simple observation: sending money across borders was still harder than sending an email.

International wire transfers took days, cost substantial fees, and often failed for mysterious reasons. In an era when information could travel around the world in milliseconds, moving money felt stuck in the 1970s.

September 2012. Larsen co-founded OpenCoin with programmer Jed McCaleb. Their goal was to build a payment protocol that could settle transactions between any currencies in seconds rather than days. The company went through several name changes and OpenCoin became Ripple Labs in 2013, then simply Ripple in 2015. But the mission remained constant: create what Larsen called "the Internet of Value."

Ripple's approach was different from Bitcoin, which was designed as an alternative to traditional currencies. Instead, Ripple built technology that could make traditional currencies move more efficiently. Banks could use Ripple's network to settle international payments without maintaining accounts in every country where they did business. The system used XRP, Ripple's native digital currency, as a bridge asset.

Instead of converting dollars to euros through multiple intermediaries, a bank could convert dollars to XRP, transfer the XRP to another bank, and have that bank convert XRP to euros. The entire process could happen in seconds.

Under Larsen's leadership as CEO, Ripple signed partnerships with major financial institutions including Santander, American Express, and Standard Chartered. You can call them pilot programs or experiments. But banks were using Ripple's technology to process real customer payments worth millions of dollars.

As cryptocurrency markets exploded in 2017 and 2018, XRP became one of the most valuable digital assets in the world. At its peak, Larsen's holdings were worth over $59 billion on paper, briefly making him one of the wealthiest people in America.

But Larsen had learned from his previous companies that scaling required different skills than founding. In 2016, he stepped down as CEO and became executive chairman, bringing in Brad Garlinghouse to handle day-to-day operations while he focused on strategy and regulatory relationships.

Success was about to bring scrutiny.

The Regulatory Crucible

December 2020. The phone call every crypto executive dreads.

The Securities and Exchange Commission was suing Ripple, alleging that XRP was an unregistered security and that the company had raised $1.3 billion through illegal securities offerings.

The lawsuit created uncertainty that would last nearly five years. XRP's price fell as exchanges delisted the token to avoid regulatory risk. Ripple faced the possibility of massive fines and fundamental changes to its business model.

Larsen could have settled quickly and moved on to other projects. Many crypto entrepreneurs would have. Instead, he chose to fight.

Ripple spent tens of millions of dollars on legal fees, arguing that XRP functioned as a currency rather than a security. The company's lawyers pointed out that Bitcoin and Ethereum had been declared non-securities by regulators, and XRP operated similarly.

The strategy proved correct, but it took years to vindicate.

In 2023, Judge Analisa Torres ruled that programmatic sales of XRP to retail investors did not constitute securities offerings. The decision was a partial victory that helped clarify the regulatory status of digital assets.

In 2025, the SEC dismissed its appeals and settled the case for $125 million which a substantial fine, but a fraction of what many had expected. The legal victory validated Larsen's long-term approach to building crypto companies.

Rather than operating in regulatory gray areas like many crypto firms, Ripple had worked with authorities from the beginning. When the crackdown came, the company was prepared.

Throughout the legal battle, Ripple continued expanding its business. In April 2025, the company acquired prime brokerage firm Hidden Road for $1.25 billion, adding trading and custody services to its portfolio. Ripple is also pursuing a national bank charter and has partnered with BNY Mellon to custody reserves for its RLUSD stablecoin.

The Quiet Impact

Today, Larsen's influence extends far beyond the companies he's built.

In 2019, he and his wife Lyna Lam donated $25 million in XRP to San Francisco State University which is the largest cryptocurrency gift to a US university at the time. The donation created endowed chairs in fintech and innovation while funding global programs for students. Universities have rigorous processes for accepting and managing donations. By working through these institutions, Larsen helped normalise crypto philanthropy.

He's also funded privacy advocacy through Californians for Privacy Now, a coalition that successfully pushed California to pass financial privacy laws requiring companies to get consumer permission before sharing personal data. The campaign collected 600,000 signatures and lobbied major financial firms to withdraw their opposition.

More recently, Larsen has become vocal about cryptocurrency's environmental impact. In 2021, he launched the "Change the Code, Not the Climate" campaign, funding efforts to convince Bitcoin miners to switch from energy-intensive proof-of-work mining to more efficient alternatives.

The position put him at odds with Bitcoin maximalists who view proof-of-work as essential to the network's security. But Larsen argued that cryptocurrency needed to address climate concerns if it wanted mainstream adoption.

“This campaign is not anti-Bitcoin – it is anti-pollution,” explained Larsen, “We need to clean up our industry. And the issue is not, as some have suggested, powering Bitcoin with clean energy. We need the limited supply of clean energy for other vital uses. The issue is changing the code to use far less energy. That’s the environmentally responsible way forward.”

His willingness to challenge crypto orthodoxy reflected the same thinking that had driven his business career: popular doesn't always mean optimal.

At 64, Larsen continues working six days a week while pursuing hobbies that reflect his methodical approach to complex problems. He restores classic cars from the 1960s with his sons, taking them apart and rebuilding them from the frame up. The projects take three years to complete and require the same attention to detail that has characterised his business career.

He envisions a world where sending $100 from San Francisco to Lagos takes seconds and costs pennies, where small businesses can access international markets without navigating complex banking relationships.

His three companies attacked different pieces of the financial system that weren't serving ordinary people well enough.

E-Loan made mortgage shopping transparent. Prosper democratised lending. Ripple accelerated international payments.

The Ethereum Evangelist

By early 2019, daily trading volume grew consistently. The protocol processed millions of dollars in trades while requiring no employees, offices, or traditional business operations. Adams built a system that operates according to mathematical rules rather than human decision-making.

The summer of 2020 changed something for decentralised finance.

DeFi Summer brought explosive growth to blockchain-based financial applications. Uniswap sat at the centre of the movement, providing infrastructure that enables new forms of programmable money.

Adams watched trading volumes surge from millions to billions of dollars per month. The protocol processed more volume than many traditional financial institutions while remaining decentralised and permissionless.

October 10, 2024. Uniswap Labs announced Unichain, an Ethereum Layer 2 network designed specifically for DeFi applications.

The blockchain represents Adams' evolution from protocol developer to infrastructure provider. Building a dedicated network allows Uniswap to optimise the entire stack for automated market making.

Unichain launched on February 11, 2025, with Rollup-Boost technology. Trusted execution environments enable private mempools and fair transaction ordering. This technical innovation addressed a persistent problem in decentralised trading: maximal extractable value, or MEV.

In traditional blockchain networks, sophisticated traders can observe pending transactions and front-run regular users by paying higher gas fees. Hacked His Way to a Job

Jack Patrick Dorsey grew up Catholic in a working-class Missouri family. His father built mass spectrometers. His mother ran a café. Young Jack battled a speech impediment that kept him indoors, where he discovered computers and communication systems.

Dorsey programmed dispatch software. Real taxi companies used his code to coordinate their fleets, solving actual problems for actual businesses.

His obsession wasn't random. Dorsey had identified the power of short, frequent updates to coordinate complex systems. Emergency dispatchers didn't waste words because clarity could save lives. What if that same efficiency could improve everyday communication?

At Bishop DuBourg High School, he worked part-time as a fashion model. And after school he'd hack into systems not to break them, but to understand how they worked.

The hack that changed his life happened at age 16. Dispatch Management Services had built a website but listed no contact information. When Dorsey found a security flaw, instead of exploiting it, he emailed the company chairman explaining the vulnerability and how to fix it.

Dorsey used it to start a conversation.

The chairman, Greg Kidd, decided to hire him within a week. A teenager from Missouri was now working for a Manhattan logistics company, learning how to coordinate movement and resources in real-time.

By age 14, he was programming dispatch software that taxi companies actually used. By 18, he had dropped out of New York University one semester short of graduating. The idea consuming his thoughts couldn't wait for a diploma.

What if people could broadcast short status updates to their friends, like dispatchers updating their location and activity? What if you could know what everyone in your network was doing right now, without the friction of phone calls or long emails?

The Platform That Ate the World

In 2000, Dorsey moved to California and started a company focused on dispatching couriers and emergency services via the web. The venture failed. He spent the next five years as a freelance programmer, refining his ideas and waiting for the right moment.

That moment came in 2006 at Odeo, a struggling podcasting company. During a brainstorming session, Dorsey pitched his status-update concept. He described it as combining blogging's broadcast nature with the immediacy of instant messaging.

Working with Noah Glass and Biz Stone, Dorsey built the first Twitter prototype in two weeks. The name "twttr" followed the five-character SMS short code format, inspired by Flickr.

On March 21, 2006, at 9:50 PM, Dorsey posted the first tweet: "just setting up my twttr."

Twenty-four characters that changed how millions communicate.

Twitter's breakout moment came at the 2007 South by Southwest festival. Conference attendees used the service to coordinate meetups and share real-time updates. Daily tweet volume jumped from 20,000 to 60,000 during the festival. Dorsey's teenage intuition about status updates had been correct.

But success brought challenges he wasn't prepared for. As CEO from 2007 to 2008, Dorsey struggled with Twitter's operational demands. The service crashed frequently. Employees complained about his management style. Reports surfaced that he'd leave work early for yoga classes and fashion design courses.

The board lost patience.

October 2008 arrives like a judgment day. They fire him from his own creation. Co-founder Evan Williams takes over. Dorsey gets to keep the chairman title, but everyone knows the truth. The boy genius who conceived Twitter has been deemed unfit to run it.

The lesson stings but clarifies. Dorsey can build products people love. He can't yet build organisations that scale.

Instead of retreating, he pivots.

His former boss, Jim McKelvey, had recently lost a glass art sale because he couldn't accept credit card payments. McKelvey's frustration was shared by millions of small business owners who lacked access to merchant services.

Their solution was a small, square-shaped device that plugged into a smartphone's headphone jack. Anyone could accept credit card payments anywhere. The first Square reader cost $10 and turned every phone into a point-of-sale system.

Square embodied the same philosophy as Twitter. Remove friction and democratise access. If Twitter gave everyone a broadcasting platform, Square gave every entrepreneur the payment processing power previously available only to large corporations.

The company launched publicly in 2010.

This time, Dorsey applied lessons from his Twitter experience. He built stronger operational systems. Hired experienced executives. Focused on sustainable growth rather than viral adoption.

By 2015, Twitter was struggling under new leadership. User growth had stagnated. The stock price was falling. Competitors like Facebook and Instagram captured more attention.

The board asked Dorsey to return as CEO with one unprecedented condition: he'd remain CEO of Square too. Critics questioned whether anyone could effectively run two major public companies simultaneously.

He maintained offices at both companies. Scheduled his days to the minute. Relied heavily on leadership teams while providing strategic direction.

The arrangement worked. Twitter stabilised. Square continued growing and went public in November 2015. Both companies benefited from Dorsey's design sensibility and his ability to cut through complexity to find simple solutions.

The fired CEO had learned to become a leader.

Building Tomorrow's Money

As Dorsey rebuilt his career, he discovered bitcoin. The cryptocurrency embodied principles he'd learned from dispatch systems: decentralisation, peer-to-peer communication, elimination of intermediaries.

"Bitcoin changes absolutely everything," he declared in 2018. If he weren't running Twitter and Square, he'd work on Bitcoin full-time.

He wasn't content with just talking. In 2020, Square invested $50 million in bitcoin. Then $170 million more. Through Square's Cash App, he made Bitcoin accessible to millions who'd never owned cryptocurrency.

Dorsey also established Spiral, a division funding open-source Bitcoin development. Unlike most corporate crypto initiatives focused on profit, Spiral's mission was altruistic.

To improve Bitcoin's infrastructure for everyone.

But his second Twitter tenure coincided with growing platform scrutiny. The 2016 election revealed how foreign actors can use Twitter to spread misinformation. Congressional hearings and advertiser boycotts became routine.

The challenges peaked during 2020's election aftermath. Twitter began labeling disputed tweets and eventually suspended high-profile accounts, including President Trump's following the January 6 Capitol riot.

Dorsey defended the decisions as necessary but acknowledged their implications. "I believe this was the right decision for Twitter," he wrote about Trump's suspension. "But I also think it's important to look at the broader implications this action has on the public conversation globally."

The experience reinforced his growing belief that centralised platforms wielded too much power. He began funding research into decentralised alternatives, including Bluesky, a Twitter-backed initiative developing open social media protocols.

On November 29, 2021, Dorsey resigned as Twitter CEO for the second time. His resignation letter explained his reasoning. "I've decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders."

Unlike his first departure, this exit was voluntary and planned. He'd prepared his successor, CTO Parag Agrawal, and believed Twitter needed leadership without founding-era baggage.

Less than a year later, Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion and began implementing his own vision. Dorsey retained a 2.4% stake but offered minimal public commentary on the changes.

With Twitter behind him, Dorsey has become a decentralisation evangelist. He donated 14 bitcoin to support Nostr, a decentralised social networking protocol operating without central servers or corporate control.

At Block, he's doubled down on Bitcoin initiatives. The company developed 3-nanometer bitcoin mining chips and launched Bitkey, a self-custody wallet designed for mainstream users. Block's mining hardware features modular design intended to last ten years instead of the industry standard of three to five years.

Today, Dorsey operates at the intersection of technology and ideology. Through Block, he's building financial infrastructure for a post-traditional-banking world. Through Bitcoin advocacy and Nostr funding, he's promoting alternatives to current internet platforms.

The common thread is his belief that individuals should control their financial and digital lives. Bitcoin eliminates dependence on banks and governments. Nostr eliminates dependence on platform companies. Self-custody wallets eliminate dependence on exchanges.

These are expressions of political philosophy valuing individual sovereignty over institutional control.

Dorsey remains as focused on the future as he was dreaming of real-time city maps. His current projects reflect his belief that the most important internet infrastructure is still being built.

The police scanner that first captured his imagination still influences how he thinks about communication. The best messages are brief, clear, actionable.

Michael Novogratz was born as the third of seven children in a family that treated competition the way other households treated vegetables: mandatory, good for you and non-negotiable. His father had played football at West Point, so the baseline expectation was excellence, or at least a convincing performance of it.

At Fort Hunt High School, Novogratz discovered wrestling. Not just as a sport, but as a laboratory for reading opponents, managing risk under pressure, and understanding that preparation mattered more than natural talent.

He reached the state runner-up level before Princeton University recruited him. Division I wrestling at an Ivy League school meant cutting weight, tactical preparation, and performing when everything depended on individual execution. Novogratz captained Princeton's team and earned first-team All-Ivy League honours in 1986 and 1987.

April 1, 1989. Goldman Sachs.

Novogratz joined as a short-term bond salesman, one of hundreds of young recruits who showed up every year hoping to make partner. Most would flame out within five years. A few would get rich. Fewer still would understand the bigger game being played.

What set Novogratz apart was his timing and his readiness to take assignments others might have dodged. In 1992, Goldman sent him to Asia, where he would spend the next seven years trading through currency swings, interest rate shocks, and ultimately the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997. At that time, central banks were actively managing exchange rates, emerging markets were becoming accessible to international capital, and technology was creating new ways to trade everything from Brazilian real to copper futures. Macro investing was entering a golden age.

Novogratz ran the Fortress Macro Fund, which grew to manage $2.3 billion in assets. The fund operated successfully for over a decade before market conditions shifted in the post-2008 environment.

February 2007. Fortress went public.

The firm became the first large US alternative asset manager to IPO, briefly creating multiple billionaires on paper. Novogratz and his partners were featured on magazine covers and keynoted major conferences. For 18 months, they were financial industry celebrities riding the peak of the credit bubble.

Then 2008 arrived like a meteor strike.

The financial crisis fundamentally changed the environment for macro trading. Central banks began coordinating policies more closely, currency relationships shifted in unexpected ways, and many of the market inefficiencies that macro funds had exploited simply disappeared.

By 2013, the macro fund was struggling. The post-crisis world had proven challenging for many macro strategies. Coordinated central bank policies reduced the kind of volatility that macro traders needed to generate returns. What had worked brilliantly for a decade suddenly didn't work at all.

October 2015. The announcement came.

Fortress would liquidate the $2.3 billion macro business. Novogratz would step away as capital was returned to investors. Thirteen years of building one of the industry's premier macro operations ended with a press release and a series of final investor calls.

The closure could have been career-ending. Instead, Novogratz treated it as education. The macro fund's success had been built on identifying policy-driven market dislocations and exploiting them before others caught on. Its failure reflected changing market conditions, not poor management.

He would need that lesson sooner than he knew.

The Digital Gold Rush

2013. Fortress offices, New York.

Pete Briger, co-chief executive of Fortress Investment Group and an old Goldman colleague called Novogratz with a question that would change his life: "Dude, what do you know about Bitcoin?"

The answer was nothing.

Novogratz had never heard of digital currency, blockchain technology, or cryptocurrency. Like most traditional finance professionals, he assumed it was either a scam or a toy for computer programmers.

But Briger had been talking to friends in California who were convinced Bitcoin represented something bigger. They partnered with Dan Morehead, a former Tiger Management executive who had launched Pantera Capital, one of the first dedicated crypto investment firms.

Together they made their initial Bitcoin purchases when the price hovered around $200. Initially, it was just another macro bet. If this digital currency thing worked, early adopters would do well. If it failed, they could afford the loss.

Here was a non-sovereign store of value emerging just as central banks were pursuing unprecedented monetary expansion. It offered exposure to technological disruption while providing a hedge against currency debasement.

By 2016, Novogratz had become one of crypto's most visible advocates, appearing on financial television to explain digital assets to institutional audiences who might have dismissed other crypto enthusiasts. His Goldman Sachs credentials and macro investing background gave him credibility with traditional investors who were just beginning to consider cryptocurrency as a legitimate asset class.

But advocacy wasn't enough. He wanted to build something.

January 9, 2018. Galaxy Digital announcement.

Novogratz revealed plans for a full-service digital assets platform combining trading, asset management, investment banking, and principal investing.

The vision was to become the Goldman Sachs of crypto by offering institutions the same range of services they received from traditional investment banks, but focused on digital asset markets.

The launch was structured through a business combination with Canadian companies, allowing Galaxy to list publicly while US regulatory frameworks for crypto businesses remained unclear. On July 31, 2018, Galaxy completed its reverse takeover and began trading on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol GLXY.

Galaxy's business model differed from pure-play crypto companies. Instead of simply buying and holding digital assets, the firm actively traded its treasury positions, using gains from successful trades to fund operations and expansion. This approach provided more flexibility than a pure hold strategy but meant financial results depended partly on market timing and trading performance.

The strategy worked brilliantly during crypto bull markets. Galaxy's treasury operations generated hundreds of millions in gains as Bitcoin and Ethereum appreciated. The firm's venture investments in crypto infrastructure and applications created additional value as the ecosystem matured.

But 2022 brought new challenges.

May 2022. The Terra Luna ecosystem collapsed in a matter of days, wiping out $60 billion in value and destroying one of crypto's most hyped projects. When Luna's algorithmic stablecoin mechanism failed catastrophically, Galaxy faced both financial losses and reputational damage.

Galaxy had invested early, buying 18.5 million LUNA tokens at $0.22 apiece in 2020, then steadily selling into the rally as the price climbed. By the time LUNA peaked at $119 in April 2022, Galaxy had already pocketed hundreds of millions of dollars in profits and reduced its holdings to almost nothing. When the algorithmic stablecoin mechanism finally failed, Galaxy’s direct financial exposure was negligible: only about 2,000 LUNA tokens remained, worth less than ten dollars after the collapse.

Instead of hiding from the mistake, Novogratz published a detailed explanation of what went wrong and what lessons the episode offered. The CEO letter addressed risk management, due diligence processes and the importance of separating sustainable business models from experimental protocols in crypto.

He acknowledged that his public support for Luna, including getting a Luna tattoo, had been premature given the project's experimental nature.

The letter became one of the most widely-cited post-mortems of the Luna collapse, because it provided an honest assessment of how even sophisticated investors could be wrong about emerging technologies.

The AI Infrastructure Bet

2024. Galaxy offices, New York.

While crypto markets recovered from the Terra Luna and FTX collapses, Novogratz was already planning Galaxy's next evolution. The firm announced a significant expansion into artificial intelligence infrastructure, leveraging its experience with energy-intensive computing operations to enter the AI data centre market.

Galaxy had learned how to operate large-scale computing infrastructure through its crypto mining operations. The same skills that optimised Bitcoin mining could be applied to AI computing, but with potentially higher margins and more predictable revenue streams.

In August 2024, Galaxy secured a $1.4 billion project financing facility for its Helios data centre campus in Texas. The facility would provide 800 megawatts of computing capacity for CoreWeave, a GPU cloud provider, under a 15-year contract that Galaxy expected to generate over $1 billion in annual revenue.

The Helios project aimed to develop up to 3.5 gigawatts of power capacity at full buildout, positioning Galaxy as a major player in the supply-constrained AI infrastructure market. The business model promised higher margins and more predictable revenue than crypto trading operations.

The firm maintained its established crypto businesses while expanding into adjacent technology sectors that leveraged its existing expertise.

Crypto has always been part finance, part theatre. Few people embody that as much as Novogratz.

He is a trader who tells stories, and a storyteller who trades. The Luna tattoo, the candid letters, the cable-news appearances. They are not just confessions or branding exercises, but proof that markets move on narrative as much as numbers.

The businesses he’s built, whether macro funds at Fortress or Galaxy’s hybrid of trading, venture, and now AI data centres have all been attempts to give shape to forces larger than any individual. The volatility of currencies, the decentralisation of finance, the computational hunger of machine learning.

If he sometimes looks reckless, it’s because he is playing in arenas where certainty doesn’t exist. And if he sometimes looks prescient, it’s because those same arenas reward the few who can move fast, absorb losses, and still raise the next bet.

For Novogratz, the question has never been whether crypto or AI will have busts. They will. The question is who will have built platforms resilient enough to survive them. And for all the chaos and spectacle that surrounds him, that may end up being his most important contribution: The scaffolding that allows the next generation of risk-takers to stand a little taller.

The 40-year-old crypto billionaire has collected over 100 plush toys, names each one, and brings them along to celebrate milestones. In his Miami apartment, where he served six months of house arrest, visitors could find a chartreuse starfish, a fox, an armadillo, a giraffe, an elephant, an octopus, a snake, and an anthropomorphised bok choy lined up like a childhood bedroom.

This might seem odd for someone who built the financial instrument that now dominates cryptocurrency trading. But Hayes has never been conventional.

In 2013, Bitcoin traders had a problem that was both completely stupid and mathematically fascinating.

Every month their futures contracts would expire, forcing them to roll positions like they were playing some kind of expensive financial Sisyphus simulator.

Roll the contract, pay fees, repeat forever, gradually transfer all your money to exchanges through transaction costs.

Arthur Hayes, a derivatives trader who had spent his career at Deutsche Bank and Citigroup figuring out how to profit from the fact that markets are held together with mathematical duct tape, looked at this situation and had what can only be described as an extremely expensive thought.

"What if time didn't exist?"

Not in a philosophical sense - Hayes wasn't having an existential crisis about the nature of temporal reality.

He was wondering what would happen if you could create a futures contract that never expired, eliminating the monthly fee-extraction ritual that was slowly bankrupting every Bitcoin trader on earth.

The answer made him a crypto kingpin, created the financial instrument that now underpins most cryptocurrency trading, and eventually landed him with federal criminal charges for building it without asking the right people for permission first.

Hayes grew up in Detroit in the 1980s, where both parents worked for General Motors and understood that education was the only reliable way to escape the automotive industry's boom-bust cycles. They moved to Buffalo so he could attend Nichols School, a preparatory academy where rich kids learned Latin and poor kids learned to network with rich kids.

He finished second in his class while playing varsity tennis. After bouncing between Hong Kong University and Wharton, he graduated in 2008 with a degree in Economics and Finance, which was perfect timing if you enjoyed watching the global financial system collapse in real-time.

Instead of staying in New York to participate in the post-crisis soul-searching about whether Wall Street was fundamentally broken, Hayes moved to Hong Kong. This turned out to be prescient, since Hong Kong was where you could trade exotic derivatives without quite as many people asking pointed questions about systemic risk.

Learning the Language of Derivatives

As a broke intern, Hayes turned food delivery into profit, charging spreads on every order for colleagues and making hundreds weekly. When recruiters visited Wharton, he impressed them by taking them to Philadelphia nightclubs. His fashion choices at work were legendary - one Casual Friday, he wore a tight pink polo, acid-washed jeans, and bright yellow sneakers, prompting a department head to ask "Who the fuck is that?" The incident got Casual Fridays cancelled.

Deutsche Bank hired Hayes as an equity derivatives trader in their Hong Kong office in 2008. That’s where Hayes gravitated toward the complex mathematics of derivatives — financial instruments whose value derives from underlying assets.

His specialty was delta-one trading and ETFs - the financial equivalent of plumbing. Not glamorous, but absolutely essential, and profitable if you understood how the pipes connected.

After three years of learning how to make money from price discrepancies that existed for approximately seventeen seconds, he moved to Citigroup in 2011. Then in 2013, bank regulations decided that fun was over and Hayes got laid off, which freed him to discover Bitcoin at exactly the moment when it needed someone who understood how financial plumbing actually worked.

Bitcoin in 2013 was trading on exchanges built by people who could code blockchain protocols but had never heard of margin requirements. Hayes saw a market that operated 24/7 with no circuit breakers, no central authority, and definitely no sophisticated risk management. It was either the future of finance or an elaborate way to lose money very quickly, and Hayes figured those weren't mutually exclusive possibilities.

The infrastructure was basic, but the underlying mechanics fascinated him. Here was a market that desperately needed the kind of financial engineering he had learned in traditional finance.

Building BitMEX

He teamed up with Ben Delo, a mathematician who could build trading engines, and Samuel Reed, who actually understood how cryptocurrencies worked. In January 2014, they started building BitMEX - Bitcoin Mercantile Exchange - which they described as "the best peer-to-peer trading platform" in competition with exchanges that mostly specialised in being barely functional.

The three founders brought complementary skills: Hayes understood market structure and derivatives, Delo could build sophisticated trading engines, and Reed knew cryptocurrency technology inside and out.

BitMEX launched live trading on November 24, 2014, with a focus on Bitcoin derivatives. The timing reflected months of careful development and stress testing. By the time they went live, the founders were literally scattered across the globe—Hayes and Delo in Hong Kong, Reed calling in from his honeymoon in Croatia.

The early product lineup included leveraged Bitcoin contracts and quanto futures, which allowed traders to express views on Bitcoin's price without actually holding the underlying asset. These were sophisticated instruments that required understanding of margin, liquidation mechanics, and cross-currency hedging.

But Hayes and his team were just getting started.

On May 13, 2016, BitMEX announced something that had never existed before: the XBTUSD perpetual swap. A futures-like contract that never expires, with funding payments between long and short positions that keep the contract price anchored to spot Bitcoin prices. The perpetual swap offered up to 100x leverage and was cash-settled in Bitcoin.

Traditional futures expire monthly, creating this absurd cycle where traders had to constantly roll positions and pay fees. Hayes borrowed a funding mechanism from currency markets and applied it to Bitcoin futures. Instead of expiring, the contracts would use funding payments between long and short positions to keep prices anchored to spot Bitcoin prices. When the contract traded above spot, longs paid shorts. When it traded below, shorts paid longs. The market became self-correcting.

This eliminated expiry dates, reduced transaction costs, and created a tool so useful that every crypto exchange immediately copied it. Today, perpetual swaps account for most crypto trading volume worldwide. Hayes had essentially solved time, at least as it applied to derivatives contracts.

Explosive Growth and Scrutiny

BitMEX's XBTUSD contract quickly became the deepest Bitcoin derivatives market in the world. The exchange's sophisticated risk management, professional-grade tools, and high leverage attracted traders from traditional finance and crypto natives alike.

By 2018, BitMEX was trading over $1 billion in notional volume daily. The exchange moved into the 45th floor of Hong Kong's Cheung Kong Center, one of the city's most expensive office buildings. When BitMEX servers went down for scheduled maintenance that August, Bitcoin prices immediately jumped 4%, adding $10 billion to the total crypto market cap.

BitMEX nominally prohibited US customers, but critics argued the restrictions were easy to circumvent. The exchange's influence on Bitcoin pricing drew attention from academics, regulators, and politicians who were just beginning to understand cryptocurrency markets.

In July 2019, economist Nouriel Roubini published a report suggesting BitMEX was involved in "systemic illegality," arguing the exchange allowed excessive risk-taking and might profit from customer liquidations. The accusations prompted regulatory investigations and congressional hearings about crypto market structure.

By late 2019, Bitcoin derivatives were generating $5-10 billion in daily trading volume. More than ten times the volume of spot Bitcoin trading. BitMEX accounted for a significant portion of this activity, making Hayes and his partners central figures in global crypto markets.

On October 1, 2020, the other shoe dropped with the subtlety of a federal indictment. The CFTC filed civil complaints while the DOJ unsealed criminal charges, arguing that BitMEX had operated as an unregistered futures commission merchant while serving US customers and ignoring anti-money laundering requirements. Prosecutors suggested that Hayes and his partners had willfully ignored compliance while generating hundreds of millions in profits.

Hayes stepped down as CEO that day. Reed was arrested in Massachusetts. Hayes and Delo were listed as "at large," which is DOJ terminology for "we know where you are but haven't picked you up yet."

The legal proceedings stretched over two years, during which Hayes discovered he had a talent for writing about markets and monetary policy. His "Crypto Trader Digest" essays became required reading for anyone trying to understand how macro economics, Federal Reserve policy, and crypto prices connected. He built frameworks for understanding why central bank decisions would inevitably drive people toward Bitcoin.

In August 2021, BitMEX agreed to pay $100 million to settle civil charges. On February 24, 2022, Hayes pleaded guilty to one count of willfully failing to establish an anti-money laundering program. On May 20, 2022, he was sentenced to six months of home detention, two years of probation, and a $10 million fine.

During his legal proceedings, Hayes emerged as one of crypto's most insightful commentators. His analysis of Federal Reserve policy and Bitcoin price dynamics influenced how traders and institutions thought about crypto as a macro asset. He outlined concepts like the "NakaDollar" - a synthetic dollar created by combining long Bitcoin positions with short perpetual swaps, effectively creating dollar exposure without traditional banking infrastructure.

Hayes has also been vocal about Bitcoin's role as a hedge against monetary debasement.

"We're moving from an analog society in terms of money transfer to a digital one, that's going to be hugely disruptive," Hayes observed. "And I saw a chance with Bitcoin and crypto to actually create a company that could benefit from this hugely chaotic transformation."

On March 27, 2025, US President Trump granted pardons to Hayes and his BitMEX co-founders, officially closing the legal chapter. By then, Hayes had already built his post-BitMEX career as Chief Investment Officer of Maelstrom, his family office fund that invests across venture capital, liquid trading strategies, and crypto infrastructure.

The fund has supported Bitcoin development through grants ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 per developer, reflecting Hayes's belief that Bitcoin's open-source development needs sustainable funding. "Bitcoin is the bedrock asset in the crypto space and unlike other crypto projects, Bitcoin never conducted an offering to raise funds for its technical development," Maelstrom's website explains.

Recent Market Moves

Hayes's current investment strategy reflects his macro outlook. In August 2025, he made headlines by purchasing over $15 million in cryptocurrencies over five days, focusing on Ethereum and DeFi tokens rather than Bitcoin. His purchases included 1,750 ETH ($7.43 million), plus significant positions in HYPE, ENA, and LDO tokens. The allocation reflected his belief that certain altcoins were positioned to benefit from market conditions like institutional push towards ETH, growing adoption of stablecoins, and protocols earning revenue by filling specific gaps in the market.

Hayes has also emerged as one of the most vocal supporters of Ethena (ENA), a synthetic dollar protocol that builds on many of the same derivative concepts he pioneered at BitMEX. In August 2025, he purchased 3.1 million ENA tokens worth $2.48 million, becoming one of the project's largest individual holders. Hayes sees Ethena as the next evolution of his NakaDollar concept, using derivatives to create dollar-pegged assets without relying on traditional banking infrastructure. The investment represents Hayes betting on a new generation of projects that use perpetual swaps and funding mechanisms to reimagine how synthetic assets work.

Earlier that month, he had sold $8.32 million worth of Ethereum near $3,500, citing macroeconomic concerns. When ETH rallied back above $4,150, he bought back in, admitting on social media: "Had to buy it all back. I pinky swear, I'll never take profit again."

Hayes's current macro thesis centers on what he sees as inevitable money printing by the Federal Reserve. He argues that structural problems including housing market stress, demographic shifts, and capital flight will force policymakers to inject approximately $9 trillion into the financial system. "If you don't print, you break the system," he says, focusing on debt burdens of entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

If this scenario unfolds, Hayes predicts Bitcoin could reach $250,000 by end of the year as investors seek alternatives to debased fiat currencies. He also sees longer-term potential for Bitcoin to reach $1 million by 2028, based on his belief that the current monetary system is unsustainable and Bitcoin represents the most viable alternative store of value.

The perpetual swap fundamentally changed how crypto trades by providing a tool that eliminates many frictions that plagued early derivatives markets.

In 2025, even mainstream platforms like Robinhood and Coinbase are launching their own perpetual products, while new exchanges like Hyperliquid are building entire businesses around Hayes's original innovation.

The regulatory framework that emerged from the BitMEX cases also shaped industry standards. Requirements for proper anti-money laundering programmes, customer verification, and regulatory registration became table stakes for any exchange serving global markets.

At 40, Hayes occupies a unique position in the crypto ecosystem. He's old enough to remember traditional finance before Bitcoin existed, experienced enough to have built infrastructure that defined how crypto trades, and battle-tested enough to have survived both meteoric success and serious legal consequences.

His story demonstrates that in crypto, sustainable success requires understanding both technology and regulation, both innovation and compliance. The perpetual swap succeeded not just because it was technically elegant, but because it solved real problems for traders while operating within existing legal frameworks - at least until those frameworks caught up with the innovation.

"We didn't have to ask permission to build this, and what other industry could three guys go and try to build an exchange that does billions of dollars a day turnover?" Hayes reflected on the BitMEX experience.

The comment captures both the opportunity and responsibility that come with building financial infrastructure in a rapidly evolving regulatory environment.

Today, as Hayes continues analysing markets and making concentrated bets based on his macro outlook, his influence extends beyond any single trade or investment. Through his writing, his investments, and his continued participation in crypto markets, he remains one of the most thoughtful voices in an industry that often prioritises hype over analysis.

It was 2017. News broke that the Bitcoin conference would stop accepting Bitcoin payments because transaction fees had spiked to $60-70 per transaction.

He didn't know it had a name (Verifiable Delay Function), so he couldn't Google it. He thought he had invented something completely new.

And in a way, he had.

The Making of a Systems Thinker

Yakovenko's journey to blockchain began with an early immigration story. Born in Ukraine in 1981, he came to the United States with his family in the early 1990s, as part of the wave of Eastern European immigrants seeking opportunity in America's tech boom.

As a teenager, he gravitated toward the C programming language, fascinated by the precision and power of low-level systems programming. "There was this magical possibility of writing a piece of code that just solves some incredible problem for the world," he later reflected about those early programming days during the dot-com era.

At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Yakovenko studied computer science while launching his first startup in the early 2000s: Alescere, a Voice over Internet Protocol system for small businesses. The company failed, but it gave him crucial experience with real-time networking protocols.

In 2003, fresh from his startup experience, Yakovenko joined Qualcomm in San Diego. What started as a standard engineering role evolved into a 13-year journey through the company's most challenging technical problems.

He worked on everything from QChat's Push-to-Talk servers to the BREW mobile operating system, eventually becoming Senior Staff Engineer Manager. He also optimised how different processors communicate with each other. Yakovenko became an expert at "safely extending OS services and protection domains to auxiliary processors", essentially figuring out how to make different parts of a computer system work together without slowing each other down.

His patent portfolio from this period reads like a blueprint for his later blockchain work: "Exposing host operating system services to an auxiliary processor" and "Extending protection domains to co-processors." His work focused on minimising overhead and improving coordination efficiency between distributed components.

"I started thinking about how we solve scaling for these kinds of problems at Qualcomm with wireless protocols, and that's what really got me to go deep down the rabbit hole," he says.

The cellular tower technology he worked on used something called time division multiple access, a method for coordinating multiple signals by carefully managing timing. In 2017, after more than a decade at Qualcomm, Yakovenko started working at Dropbox on compression and distributed systems. But it was his side project that changed everything.

He and Stephen Akridge, a GPU lead at Qualcomm, were building hardware for deep learning and mining cryptocurrency in the background to offset costs. It was supposed to be about machine learning, not blockchain innovation.

But as Yakovenko watched their mining setup coordinate with thousands of other computers, one question kept nagging at him: why was proof-of-work so inefficient?

Bitcoin fees had spiked to $60-70 per transaction. The network that was supposed to be peer-to-peer electronic cash couldn't handle basic payments. The Bitcoin conference triggered him further.

That's when the Café Soleil moment happened.

The Proof of History Breakthrough

Picture this: 10,000 people trying to agree on what happened when. Everyone's shouting over each other. It's utter chaos.

That's basically how Bitcoin worked. But Bitcoin's problem goes deeper than just noise.

Bitcoin creates new blocks every 10 minutes which is a careful balance between security and speed. Go faster, and you risk the network splitting into competing versions. Go slower, and transactions take forever. This 10-minute timing means Bitcoin can only handle about 7 transactions per second.

For comparison, Visa handles about 24,000 transactions per second on average.

The real issue was that in a distributed system with thousands of computers worldwide, there's no central clock. Each computer's clock runs slightly differently. Network messages take time to travel. Events can appear to happen in different orders depending on where you're sitting.

Thousands of Bitcoin computers spend most of their time arguing about basic questions: "Did this transaction happen before that one?" "What time did this block get created?" "Which version of the blockchain is correct?"

The more computers joined, the more arguing there was.

Yakovenko had an idea. What if you didn't need to argue about time?

What if the blockchain had its own built-in clock that nobody could fake? Every transaction would get an automatic timestamp that everyone could verify independently.

Instead of thousands of computers constantly messaging each other to agree on timing, they could each look at the same unfakeable clock and immediately know the order of events.

No more endless back-and-forth messages. Just a cryptographic stopwatch that kept perfect time.

He called it Proof of History.

Replace arguing with computing. Instead of thousands of conversations about timing, just check the clock. Simple.

Building Solana

Armed with this breakthrough, Yakovenko co-founded Solana Labs in 2018 with Greg Fitzgerald (another Qualcomm veteran) and Raj Gokal. The name came from their frequent surfing sessions at Solana Beach in California.

The co-founders would wake up, surf, bike to work, then head back to the beach after coding all day.

They were building during the 2018-2019 crypto winter, when funding was scarce and enthusiasm had dried up. But Yakovenko saw this as an advantage. They could focus on engineering without hype and pressure.

"It was like the meteor strike that killed the dinosaurs. It was definitely crypto winter, and you saw a lot of teams fall apart. We were always somewhat conservative, we never raised a ton of money, we only had about two years of runway, so we were always like 'we gotta build this thing as fast as we can and really focus on the key product that we think is gonna make a difference.'” he recalls.

The team built more than just Proof of History. They created an entire ecosystem of innovations to support high throughput:

Sealevel: A parallel smart contract runtime that lets the blockchain run multiple transactions simultaneously by pre-declaring which accounts they'll touch.

Turbine: A BitTorrent-inspired system for spreading transaction data across the network using erasure coding and randomised, stake-weighted trees.

Gulf Stream: A mempool-less transaction forwarding system that sends transactions to future leaders before they even start producing blocks.

Cloudbreak: A horizontal account storage system designed for high-concurrency access.

Each innovation tackled a different bottleneck. Together, they created something unprecedented. A blockchain that got faster as it got bigger.

March 16, 2020. The world was falling apart. Stock markets crashed, countries locked down, and startups everywhere were dying. That's the day Yakovenko chose to launch Solana. Within months, it became clear he'd picked the perfect moment to introduce the fastest blockchain the world had ever seen.

By the end of 2020, Solana had processed 8.3 billion transactions, created 54 million blocks, and attracted over 100 project integrations across DeFi, gaming, and Web3. The validator set had grown to over 300 nodes globally, which was impressive for a network less than a year old.

Developers were building applications that would have been impossible on slower blockchains. High-frequency trading systems, real-time games, and social media platforms all became feasible for the first time in blockchain history.

The Outage Years

Success brought new challenges. Solana's high throughput made it a target for the kind of adversarial traffic that revealed systemic weaknesses.

September 14, 2021: A surge of transactions during a Grape IDO caused the network to fork, leading to a 17-hour outage.

May 1, 2022: Automated NFT "blind mint" bots crashed consensus, taking the network offline for 7-8 hours.

May 31, 2022: A bug in offline transaction processing caused a 4.5-hour outage.

October 1, 2022: A misconfiguration bug led to 6 hours of downtime.

Critics pointed to these incidents as proof that Solana had sacrificed decentralisation for speed. The blockchain's monolithic design meant that when things broke, they broke spectacularly.

The team responded with systematic improvements. Better deduplication, improved nonce handling, fixes for fork-choice bugs, and the introduction of protocols like QUIC for better network reliability.

November 2022. Solana faced its biggest test when FTX collapsed.

Sam Bankman-Fried had been one of Solana's most prominent supporters, and when his exchange went down in flames, panic spread. Investors assumed anything connected to FTX would fail, too. Solana's token price crashed as people rushed to sell.

The Solana community didn't wait around for someone else to fix things.

FTX had been controlling a popular trading platform called Serum that many Solana users relied on. When FTX collapsed, that platform was essentially orphaned. Nobody knew what would happen to it.

Within hours, Solana's developers and community members took action. They copied all the code from Serum and created their own version called OpenBook, completely independent from FTX.

The technical term is "forking", creating a new version that works exactly the same but without the problematic ownership.

Throughout the entire crisis, Solana itself never stopped working.

While prices crashed and panic spread, the blockchain kept processing transactions. No downtime. No technical failures.

Unlike traditional companies that can be destroyed when their CEO gets arrested, Solana had become bigger than any single person or company backing it. The technology and community could survive on their own.

The Vision Forward

At 44, Yakovenko has built something remarkable while maintaining the peculiar combination of engineering pragmatism and crypto idealism that defines successful blockchain founders.

He advocates for what he calls "sensible rules", like lawmakers should try using the technology before regulating it.

Oddly enough, despite wanting crypto-friendly policies, he opposed Trump's idea for a government crypto reserve. Too centralised, he argued, which is the kind of principled stance that makes you wonder if he's really cut out for politics. He'd rather see innovation flourish organically than have bureaucrats control digital money, even if those bureaucrats happen to like his particular blockchain.

His ultimate vision is to transform Solana into the backbone of global finance, where information travels as fast as news itself.

Even as Solana competes directly with Ethereum in what crypto people call "the blockchain wars," Yakovenko rejects tribal thinking. Different blockchains can coexist and complement each other rather than fight each other to their death, he insists, which is a refreshingly mature perspective in an industry where people regularly predict that competing protocols will "go to zero" based on minor technical differences.

Yakovenko has built one of the world's most powerful distributed computers using an insight that seems obvious in retrospect but stumped everyone else.

Turning time itself into a blockchain data structure.

With an estimated net worth between $500 million and $800 million, he's achieved the kind of financial success that lets him focus on building rather than wealth accumulation.

But the validation is starting to arrive in the form that matters most in finance: other people's money. Four publicly traded companies now hold over $591 million worth of Solana tokens in their corporate treasuries, with Upexi leading the pack at 1.9 million SOL tokens accumulated in just four months. SOL Strategies has taken a more methodical dollar-cost averaging approach. Classover Holdings announced plans for a potential $500 million Solana investment, while Trump's proposed US Strategic Crypto Reserve includes Solana alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum as strategic assets. When publicly traded companies start treating your blockchain tokens like Treasury bills, you've probably built something that matters.

The institutional adoption suggests that Yakovenko's vision of Solana as global financial infrastructure might not be as far-fetched as it sounds. Asset managers from Franklin Templeton to Fidelity are filing for Solana spot ETFs, and companies are choosing SOL for treasury reserves using the same logic that led them to hold BTC or ETH: it's a store of value that might also power the future financial system.

If that frustrating night at Café Soleil really did produce the breakthrough that makes money move at light speed, the corporate treasurers are starting to notice.

At 54, Allaire has spent three decades building the invisible infrastructure that powers the digital world. His creation, the USDC stablecoin, processes trillions of dollars in transactions annually and has become the bridge between traditional finance and the crypto economy.

But for someone who has made a career out of seeing things that others couldn't even perceive, Allaire isn't done building the future.

The Web Awakening Decade

1990. A dorm room at Macalester College, Minnesota.

Jeremy Allaire's roommate had just done something almost unthinkable. Working for the college's computer services department, he'd managed to secure an internet connection for their room. At a time when most people thought "web" meant something spiders made, Allaire was about to stare into the future.

The first time he logged on, everything changed.

He saw it and said, “This is going to change the world”, though not with casual college enthusiasm. By graduation in 1993, the web had become his "central passion."

Think about the timing. Allaire was experiencing the internet before Netscape existed. Before Yahoo was conceived. Before most people had heard the word "cyberspace." He was getting a preview of civilisation's next chapter.

But the foundation for this moment had been built years earlier.

1984. The Allaire family living room, Winona, Minnesota.

Thirteen-year-old Jeremy walked up to his parents with a small proposal: Loan me $5,000 to start a baseball card trading business. His father, Jim, was a psychologist. His mother, Barb, was a press editor. They understood people and information. But their teenager was asking for serious money to trade pieces of cardboard.

Other kids collected cards for fun, but Jeremy looked at them differently. Market inefficiencies. Pricing trends. Opportunities to buy low and sell high.

He doubled their money.

1993. Fresh out of college with the web burning in his mind.

Jeremy had a problem; almost no one understood what he was talking about. The internet? Most businesses had never heard of it. So he did what any rational person would do. He started his own company.

Global internet Horizons was born, offering consulting for media publishers trying to figure out this mysterious "web" thing. But consulting wasn't going to change the world.

1995. Jeremy had a conversation with his brother J.J. that would either make them rich or leave them flat broke.

They founded Allaire Corporation with $18,000 of J.J.'s savings. Pretty much everything they had.

The dynamic was perfect. J.J. handled the programming wizardry. Jeremy focused on what the market actually needed. This was 1995. Before Netscape ruled browsers. Before businesses understood that the web meant money.

ColdFusion launched and changed everything practically overnight. The software turned static web pages into interactive applications that could talk to databases, handle user accounts, and process transactions.

Suddenly, companies like MySpace, Target, Toys "R" Us, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Intel could create dynamic websites without hiring armies of programmers. The software became the foundation for e-commerce, the backbone of content management, and the engine powering the dot-com boom.

Starting with twelve people in Minnesota, they achieved immediate profitability.

Recognising that the web was accelerating faster than anyone anticipated, they hooked up with Polaris Ventures in Boston and raised their first real money: $2.5 million.

When they tried to move to Silicon Valley, a landlord turned them down for being "too small." So they went to Boston instead. That rejection probably saved them. Boston's tech scene provided resources and talent, without Silicon Valley's ego-driven culture.

Annual revenues exploded from just over $1 million in 1996 to about $120 million by 2000. The company grew to over 700 employees with offices spreading across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In January 1999, they went public on NASDAQ as one of the early web software success stories that proved the internet wasn't just hype.

March 2001. The phone call that would test everything.

Macromedia wanted to buy Allaire Corporation. For $360 million, no less.

Jeremy was 29 years old and about to become very rich.

He said yes. Jeremy and J.J. sold Allaire Corporation to Macromedia, with Jeremy becoming CTO of the multimedia giant while J.J. stepped away from the tech world to pursue other interests.

The Video Revolution

In 2002, Jeremy Allaire walked into the Macromedia conference room with an idea that could make his bosses squirm.

As CTO of the multimedia software giant, he understood the implications of the numbers in front of him. Flash — Macromedia's technology that powered interactive animations, videos, and games on websites — was installed on 98% of computers worldwide. Broadband was spreading. The pieces were aligned for something that didn't exist yet.

He pitched Project Vista, a browser-based system for capturing, uploading, and publishing video on any website. Anyone could become a broadcaster. Anyone could reach a global audience.

Imagine YouTube, but this was years before Google had even heard of a video platform.

Macromedia's executives listened politely. Then they killed the project.

Jeremy had just watched his company pass up on the future of media. The same company that gave the world Flash, the technology powering early internet multimedia, had just said no to owning online video, and along with it, a piece of the web.

Jeremy Allaire quit Macromedia in February 2003.

His colleagues thought he'd lost his mind. CTO of a major tech company. Comfortable salary. Important products to manage. Why walk away from everything?

Because he'd seen the future, and Macromedia wasn't interested in building it.

Jeremy joined General Catalyst as Entrepreneur-in-Residence. For a year, he studied the market, watched the pieces move into position, and prepared for war against the entire television industry. He was just waiting for the perfect moment.

In 2004, he co-founded Brightcove with the vision of creating "an environment for independent video producers to deliver their content directly to consumers, bypassing traditional TV networks and channels.”

Jeremy's strategy had evolved since his first company. Instead of bootstrapping with borrowed money, he decided to "get VC funding immediately and grow big fast." Taking on television required serious capital and partnerships with major content producers.

The company's mission reflected Jeremy's evolving philosophy about the democratising power of internet technologies. The growth proved Jeremy right about everything. Content creators who couldn't afford TV networks suddenly had global distribution. Independent filmmakers could reach audiences without begging media moguls for permission.

Brightcove went public in 2012. $290 million in valuation. Jeremy owned 7.1%.

He'd successfully built the marketplace that enabled thousands of creators to reach global audiences without begging television networks, movie studios, or media executives for permission. But while Brightcove conquered online video, he stepped down as CEO to become chairman in 2013.

Why leave when everything's working? And for the second time? But Jeremy was already looking around the next corner.

The Money Revolution

Once again, in 2013, Jeremy Allaire was staring at his computer screen, just like he had in that Minnesota dorm room twenty-three years ago.

This time around, he was reading up on something called Bitcoin.

The 2008 financial crisis had left him questioning everything about traditional banking. Lehman Brothers had collapsed. Bear Stearns had vanished. The global financial system had nearly imploded, and Jeremy was wondering if there was a better way.

When he first came across Bitcoin, the feeling was familiar, almost like déjà vu. "I've had the exact same experience with digital currency, especially with Bitcoin," he told Fortune. "We're in the very early stages of building out a radical technology that has the potential to change the world in as significant a manner as the web."

He saw what he called "a universal system of plumbing for money, just as the HTTP protocol served as the foundation for information to spread through the internet."

October 2013. Jeremy co-founded Circle with Sean Neville.

The vision was to help create the world's first global currency built on the internet and built on open platforms and standards such as Bitcoin.

Accel Partners and other prominent VCs backed them immediately. Everyone could sense this wasn't an incremental improvement to existing financial services.

Jeremy wanted to create programmable money that could settle payments almost instantly and at a fraction of traditional wire transfer costs. They were not about improving existing financial services, but creating entirely new categories that could operate globally without the correspondent banking relationships that made international transfers slow and expensive.

But Circle's early experiments with consumer Bitcoin apps and trading desks weren't quite hitting the mark. The breakthrough came when Jeremy realised the problem wasn't the technology, but volatility.

2018. The creation of USDC

Working with Coinbase through the Centre Consortium, Circle launched USD Coin. A stablecoin backed by actual US dollar reserves. Each USDC token was worth exactly one dollar.

Suddenly, businesses could enjoy the benefits of cryptocurrency with instant global transfers, 24/7 availability, programmable smart contracts — all this, without exposing themselves to Bitcoin's wild price swings.

The regulatory approach Jeremy chose was risky. Instead of operating in grey areas like many crypto companies, Circle worked directly with financial regulators to ensure USDC met the highest standards for transparency and compliance.

This decision sometimes put Circle at a competitive disadvantage. Other stablecoin issuers moved faster because they cared less about compliance. But Jeremy was playing a longer game.

By 2025, USDC had become the second-largest stablecoin by market cap, with over $64 billion in circulation. Businesses used it for international payments. Developers built financial applications on top of it. Individuals send remittances across borders instantly.

Jeremy's success came despite facing what industry observers called a nearly impossible distribution challenge. Unlike Tether, which had gained adoption through early partnerships with crypto exchanges in Asia, Circle had to build distribution networks from scratch.

Circle’s response was a strategic partnership with Coinbase, where Circle pays 50% of its net interest income in exchange for distribution throughout the Coinbase network.

Expensive? Yes. Effective? You bet!.

USDC became the primary alternative to Tether in Western markets.

The Crisis Test

March 10, 2023, Dubai. What was supposed to be Jeremy's son's thirteenth birthday weekend.

The phone started buzzing at 2 AM local time.

Silicon Valley Bank was collapsing. And Circle had $3.3 billion of USDC's reserves sitting in that bank.

Within hours, USDC lost its peg to the dollar, falling as low as $0.87. Traders were panicking. The stablecoin that Jeremy had spent five years building looked like it might become practically worthless overnight.

Jeremy assembled a virtual war room on Google Meet, working eight hours ahead of his East Coast team. His son's birthday party was forgotten. This was about protecting millions of people who trusted Circle with their money.

Plan A: Transfer funds to other banks immediately.

Plan B: Rely on FDIC deposit insurance to cover any losses.

Plan C: Negotiate deals with companies willing to buy Circle's SVB holdings at a discount.

While the crypto world watched, Jeremy made a personal guarantee: Circle would "cover any shortfall" if SVB deposits weren't recovered.

The crisis tested everything Jeremy had built his reputation on. Transparency. Accountability. Doing the right thing when it was difficult.

Circle published detailed blog posts explaining exactly what had happened and what steps they were taking to protect customers.

Three days later, federal regulators guaranteed SVB's deposits.

USDC returned to its dollar peg. The crisis was over.

Throughout Circle's development, Jeremy positioned himself as cryptocurrency's most prominent advocate for clear regulatory frameworks. Circle became the first major global stablecoin issuer to comply with the European Union's Markets in Crypto Assets regulation in 2024.

The strategy was working.

And then Jeremy decided to take Circle public.

The journey to public markets wasn't smooth. An initial SPAC merger attempt in 2021 didn't receive SEC approval. But Jeremy persisted.

July 2025. Circle went public on the New York Stock Exchange.

The IPO filing revealed a company with substantial revenue, clear regulatory compliance, and a business model operating at massive scale. Circle's public debut valued the company at over $4.6 billion. Jeremy's decade-long bet on stablecoins had paid off spectacularly.

Today, Circle trades as CRCL with a market cap exceeding $40 billion. The stock has gained over 430% since its July IPO, making Jeremy's vision one of the most successful public market debuts in crypto history.

The Genius Moment

On July 18, 2025, President Donald Trump signed a piece of legislation that would vindicate everything Jeremy Allaire had built over the past decade. The GENIUS Act became America's first comprehensive stablecoin regulation. Jeremy's strategy of embracing regulatory compliance had positioned USDC perfectly.

The GENIUS Act did three things Jeremy had been advocating for years. First, it confirmed stablecoins weren't securities, clearing away regulatory uncertainty that had plagued the industry. Second, it required full backing by safe assets like Treasury bills, addressing concerns about reserve transparency. Third, it brought stablecoin issuers under the same compliance framework as traditional banks.

Jeremy had spent years building the infrastructure. Now governments were scrambling to adapt to a world where programmable money was inevitable.

The prophet who saw the web's potential in 1990, video's democratisation in 2002, and cryptocurrency's revolution in 2013, had just watched his third prediction redefine money itself.

In an industry obsessed with moving fast and breaking things, he's proven that the most transformative change often comes from patience, persistence, and the wisdom to see what others overlook.

Three predictions. Three industries left with a meaningful impact. And if his track record holds, the most important changes are still ahead.

The Making of a Hustler

Netz’s mother, an undocumented immigrant from France who spoke little English, struggled to find stable work. They moved around constantly, staying with friends, acquaintances, and sometimes even complete strangers who were willing to take them in temporarily. For young Luca, home was wherever they happened to sleep that week.

Most would view such an upbringing as a handicap. Netz learned to see it as an education. Constant displacement taught him adaptability. Uncertainty trained him to spot opportunities others overlooked. Hunger taught him to move fast when those opportunities struck.

By the time he was in middle school, Netz had figured out a simple truth: his classmates would pay more for convenience than a walk to Burger King. So, he started buying chicken sandwiches and snacks, then sold them from his backpack at a markup. Simple math, but it worked.

He watched Ring grow from a scrappy startup into a billion-dollar Amazon acquisition target. While he packed boxes, venture capital poured in. While he processed orders, the company scaled. He was getting an education in startup mechanics that most mainstream MBAs never see.

"I was able to see on the ground level what a company went from raising a million dollars to being a billion-dollar company," Netz recalled.

The Gold Chain Epiphany

While working at Ring, 16-year-old Netz started noticing something peculiar about hip-hop culture. Rappers would spend tens of thousands, sometimes even hundreds of thousands of dollars on gold chains and diamond jewellery. But when he looked closer, he realised most fans couldn't tell the difference between a $100,000 chain and a $200 gold-plated replica.

That observation became the foundation of his first real business. Netz found suppliers for gold-plated chains and cubic zirconia diamonds that looked nearly identical to the expensive versions. Then he developed a marketing strategy that was both simple and brilliant: he would pay fan pages of popular rappers $50 to $100 to promote his jewellery.

"Every single time I paid them, and they posted my promotion, we would make $1,000 to $2,000 to $5,000 back every single time," he recalls. The return on investment was so strong that he could reinvest profits immediately and scale aggressively.

Within nine months of launching his drop-shipping business on Shopify, Netz had generated his first million dollars in revenue. He was 18 years old. Eventually, he sold the jewellery business for $8 million, giving him the capital to pursue bigger things.

With money in the bank, Netz began diversifying, drawing on his experience with social media marketing from the jewellery business. He served as Chief Marketing Officer for Von Dutch, the iconic clothing brand, gaining experience in established brand management.

Then he went on to become CMO and a major investor in Gel Blaster, a toy company manufacturing Orbeez-based toy guns. Under his marketing leadership, Gel Blaster achieved significant market success and became what industry publications described as "North America's fastest growing toy company."

But the universe had something else, something more adorable in store for him.

The Penguin Rescue

In early 2022, the NFT market was still riding high from the previous year's explosion. Digital art was selling for millions, celebrities were changing their profile pictures to cartoon apes, and new projects launched daily with promises of building the next Disney.

Among them was Pudgy Penguins, a collection of 8,888 cartoon penguin NFTs that had captured attention with their adorable designs and strong community. But by January 2022, the project was in crisis. The original founders had over-promised and under-delivered on roadmap items. There were allegations of treasury mismanagement, and community trust had collapsed.

On January 6, 2022, the community voted to oust the original founders. That same day, Netz made a public offer on Twitter: 750 ETH (roughly $2.5 million at the time) for the entire Pudgy Penguins collection along with intellectual property rights.

It wasn't an easy decision. The purchase happened just one week before the NFT market entered what would soon become a two-year bear market. Netz and his executive team had pooled resources for the acquisition and were working without salaries for a year while pouring another half million of their own money into keeping the project alive.

What attracted him was the potential he saw for building something lasting. "If I wasn't able to close my eyes and picture Pudgy Penguins as a billion-dollar brand, I would never have purchased it," he says.

Beyond Digital Collectables

Most people expected Netz to flip Pudgy Penguins, clean up the mess, pump the floor price, and sell to the next buyer. Instead, he ignored the NFT market entirely.

Under his leadership at Igloo Inc., Pudgy Penguins became something unprecedented: a crypto brand that worked in the real world. Netz built six different revenue streams: digital experiences, physical products, licensing deals, content creation, film and TV development, and gaming. Not just profile pictures anymore, the penguins became characters in a much larger story.

The physical products gambit seemed insane at first. Crypto people buying cartoon penguin plushies? But Netz wasn't targeting crypto people. He was targeting parents at Walmart.

Each plush toy comes with a QR code that ushers buyers into "Pudgy World", which is a digital space where they get a crypto wallet and can claim NFT wearables.

Pudgy World is a free-to-play 3D browser game, lets players customise penguin avatars and explore virtual worlds using their NFTs and physical toys, seamlessly integrating Web3 ownership with accessible gaming. Parents think they're buying a stuffed animal for their kid. But, they're actually onboarding to Web3 without realising it.

The strategy worked in ways nobody predicted. Pudgy Penguins toys now sit on shelves at Walmart, Target, Chuck E. Cheese, Amazon, and Walgreens. Over 1.5 million toys sold. More than $10 million in revenue in one year.

While other NFT projects collapsed or pivoted desperately, Pudgy Penguins had quietly become a crypto brand that didn't need crypto to survive.

The Token Launch

On December 13, 2024, Netz dropped $1.5 billion worth of PENGU tokens into the wallets of millions of users across the crypto ecosystem. The largest airdrop in Solana's history. He chose Solana for its lower transaction fees and higher throughput to maximise accessibility.

25.9% of the tokens went to the Pudgy Penguin community, 24.12% to other communities and new member onboarding, and the remainder was split between team members (with vesting schedules), liquidity, and company reserves.

The launch sparked intense debate in the crypto community. Some praised the broad distribution as democratising access to the project's success. Others criticised giving tokens to millions of wallets rather than concentrating rewards among long-term holders.

Netz defends the strategy: "I wasn't trying to launch a $2 billion token and that be the ceiling forever. I'm going after the big kahuna. I'm going after Doge." His thesis is that for PENGU to reach the scale of established meme coins like Dogecoin, it needed a distribution story that could resonate with mainstream audiences.

The token's journey since launch has validated some of Netz's bold predictions. After debuting with a market cap of around $2.3 billion, PENGU experienced the typical volatility of major token launches, dropping significantly before eventually finding support levels. The token spent months consolidating between key price levels, building a foundation for what would become a dramatic rally.

By mid-2025, PENGU surged over 300% in a matter of weeks, pushing its market cap beyond $2.5 billion as whale accumulation increased and trading volumes topped $2.5 billion daily.

The rally was fueled by multiple catalysts that demonstrated the ecosystem's growing mainstream appeal. The most significant driver was Canary Capital's groundbreaking application to the SEC for a PENGU/NFT-focused ETF. This institutional validation created massive FOMO across the market and signalled that traditional finance was taking notice of the Pudgy Penguins ecosystem. Whale accumulation provided the technical foundation for the surge, with over 200 million PENGU tokens acquired by large holders since July alone, while trading volumes spiked to reflect heightened institutional and retail interest.

Strategic partnerships with mainstream brands including NASCAR, Lufthansa, and Suplay Inc. brought unprecedented visibility beyond crypto circles. Adding fuel to the speculation fire were persistent rumours of a potential OpenSea acquisition by Pudgy Penguins, which the team denied later.

Meanwhile, the original NFT collection has maintained strong performance, with floor prices holding around 15-16 ETH, a significant recovery from bear market lows and validation of Netz's strategy to build lasting value beyond short-term hype.

Building the Consumer Blockchain

Abstract launched in January 2025 as Netz's biggest gamble yet: a blockchain that doesn't feel like a blockchain. No wallet setup. No seed phrases to store. No gas fees to calculate. Users can start transacting without knowing they're using blockchain technology at all.

Netz believes the blockchain is the least interesting thing about Abstract. In his view, consumers won't come on-chain until they have a reason to, and they can't until the friction disappears. More than anything, he wanted Abstract to be fun, a place where people could play games, collect digital items, and interact with apps without ever thinking about the underlying technology.

The vision attracted $11 million from Founders Fund and other top-tier investors. Abstract launched with over 100 apps and 400 more currently in development. These aren't DeFi protocols or trading platforms. They're gaming, music, sports, and fashion apps that happen to run on blockchain rails.

The ambition mirrors the man behind it. Netz works six twelve-hour days a week, 8 AM to 8 PM, no vacations. The only break comes between 6 and 8 PM, which he calls "critical thinking time", two hours to process the day and plan tomorrow's execution.

Abstract could be the platform that finally brings crypto to mainstream consumers. Or it could be another expensive lesson in the gap between vision and reality. For Netz, the discomfort of not knowing which way it goes is exactly the point.

Vision for the Future

Netz has a theory about what comes next. Traditional brands sell products to consumers, a one-way transaction that ends at the cash register. NFTs flip that model entirely. Instead of customers, you get participants. Instead of buyers, you get stakeholders who share in the upside when the brand succeeds.

The mechanism creates unprecedented alignment. When Pudgy Penguin holders promote the brand, they, by default, become investors protecting their own assets. When the toys hit Walmart shelves, every NFT holder wins. It's capitalism with skin in the game for everyone involved.

But Netz isn't thinking about quarterly earnings. He's building for decades. The full Pudgy World experience, eighteen months in development with hundreds of thousands of accounts already created, is set to launch soon. He's planning aggressive expansion into Asia-Pacific markets, betting that the next crypto surge emerges from the East.

At twenty-five, Luca Netz sits at the intersection of two worlds that weren't meant to collide. On one end, the chaotic, speculative universe of cryptocurrency, where fortunes evaporate in minutes. On the other end, the slow-moving machinery of traditional retail, where landing shelf space at Walmart requires months of negotiations and a proven track record.

Every Abstract user who signs up with just an email enters the future of finance without knowing they've crossed the threshold.

This is Netz's revolution. Making the impossible feel inevitable. He didn't disrupt industries. He taught them to speak to each other.

Throughout crypto's short history, most success stories follow a familiar arc: technical breakthrough, venture funding, explosive growth, and eventual irrelevance. Netz wrote a different script. He turned the industry's biggest weakness — its opacity to everyday people — into his competitive advantage.

Some entrepreneurs build companies. Others build movements. Netz built a new category of existence. One where digital ownership feels as natural as holding a stuffed animal, where global communities form around shared joy rather than shared interests, where the most sophisticated technology hides behind the simplest experiences.
