Coinbase is building L2, USDC transfer free in Mexico
Coinbase, the second largest crypto exchange in the world, is launching its very own blockchain called Base!
The plan is to offer a secure, low-cost, developer-friendly way to build Dapps on the blockchain.
And not to issue a new network token.
What's in store?
Base is an Ethereum L2 blockchain network
Completely open-source code
Interacts with Coinbase's product suite
Will connect to the Ethereum L1 and L2s, as well as other blockchain ecosystems like Solana.
Ether is the native asset - pay for gas fees in ETH.
Built on the "OP Stack" used by Optimism.
Coinbase is joining Optimism as a core developer on the open-source OP Stack, a developer toolkit for the Optimism network
🎁 Dropping free mints
Coinbase created a free NFT mint to celebrate the testnet launch of its Layer 2 network, Base. And so far, people have spent $280,000 to mint the NFTs.
And obviously the price of optimism token rose by 6.5% Thursday.
🌟 Decentralised future
Coinbase plans to decentralise the Optimism ecosystem by creating a "Superchain" of connecting networks built on the OP Stack. The current version of Optimism is a Stage 0 rollup. By the end of 2023, Coinbase plans to have progressed Base to Stage 1. And by 2024, they plan to level up to Stage 2 rollups for maximum decentralisation and security, all while keeping things fun and friendly!
And btw, hey Mexico, USDC transfer is free. Love, Coinbase 👇
Meanwhile, Cathie Wood is building up Coinbase stock. ARK Innovation added a total of around $13.2 million worth of Coinbase shares and also added 31,547 COIN shares ($1.93 million) to its Next Generation Internet ETF! Always bullish!🚀

Casey Rodarmor, Ordinal protocol developer
“Make Bitcoin Fun Again”
I think that being able to not just do NFTs on Bitcoin, but to make them far-and-away better, for both technical and social reasons, is great for Bitcoin, and will be great for adoption and goodwill, and get people into Bitcoin who like fun. We don't have enough fun!”
Casey has been into technology since dinosaurs roamed the Earth (okay, maybe just since 2010). He's the brains behind the Ordinal protocol, which lets you make cool NFTs and scribbles on Bitcoin. Casey got inspired by Satoshi Nakamoto's talk about "atoms" in the original Bitcoin code and he's on a mission to bring some fun back into the Bitcoin game. When he's not busy with his projects, he co-hosts the SF Bitcoin BitDevs and even has his own podcast.
Buying and selling is not the only way for having fun, no? There are more ways. Brazilian Bitcoin Beach Carnival Ends with New World Record
“YOLO. Let’s find out.” Yes Casey. We will.
Blockchain? Okay. Crypto? Not Okay.
So, the IMF finally decided to show some love for blockchain technology! They're giving it a big thumbs up for all the public benefits it brings to the table. But when it comes to cryptocurrencies, they're still not sure if they're ready to swipe right or left. They cited three areas in which private issues have made technological strides with blockchains:
Tokenisation - represents property rights to an asset.
Encryption - decouples compliance checks from transactions.
Programmability - allows for financial contracts to be written and automatically executed.
Despite these advancements, the IMF still says that "crypto assets have been more of a disappointment than a revolution for many users."
Looks like crypto still has some work to do if it wants to win these regulators’ heart!
Fed’s warning again. Big shocker!
The Federal Reserve and its buddies just issued another statement about crypto being a threat to U.S. banking. HWGA! Apparently, these agencies think that even if a crypto company seems stable, their bank deposits could be unstable and driven by "crypto-asset sector dynamics." Agencies joining the Federal Reserve are the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).
Let’s just say haters gonna hate, Hodlers gonna Hodl and move on!

Ringing bells in the metaverse
The wedding: Hold onto your nachos and prepare to salsa because Taco Bell is spicing up things by giving away a Taco Bell Metaverse Wedding to one fortunate duo on February 24th in Decentraland. A unique Taco-themed Indian wedding!
These lucky lovebirds worked closely with Taco Bell and their brand's partners to plan a wedding that's fun and exciting:
American actor Kal Penn will be facilitating the ceremony,
The couple and their guests will partake in Taco Bell-themed festivities.
A private reception at the Pacifican Cantina Taco Bell location and sponsoring
A New Zealand honeymoon for the couple.
The proceedings: Colombia last week, they held a court hearing in Meta's metaverse! Yep, you heard that right. They used Horizon Workrooms to get together virtually and discuss important matters for two hours straight. The meeting was live-streamed on YouTube, everyone appeared as computer-generated avatars, and the lawyers even put on virtual headsets. Such a futuristic court hearing!
Rip WazirX NFT. Coinbase NFT hanging on 🪂
Okay, so WazirX, the Indian crypto exchange, has officially closed down its NFT marketplace. Apparently, nobody was really buying anything, so they decided to pull the plug. Plus, they had to move their assets out of Binance wallets because Binance said so. WazirX has been dealing with some serious problems lately, like getting a lot of attention from regulators and a huge drop in trading volume. But hey, they still managed to grow 7 times in the last fiscal year, so that's something, right?
But Coinbase is not giving up on its NFT venture even though it's not doing so hot. According to Emilie Choi, the prez and COO, they're keeping the project alive, but it has a lean team on it now. "We've got a very lean team on it now, but we're not throwing in the towel by any means," she said.
The payback liquidation
Three Arrows Capital (3AC) liquidators plan to begin selling certain NFTs in their possession within the next month. Because they are broke and they owe people money. According to the liquidator, said the process of offloading the bankrupt firm’s NFTs would begin after March 23 as part of a bid to recoup the $3.5 billion it owes to creditors.
The notice did not specify which NFTs would be sold. But, Tom Wan, a research analyst at 21Shares parent company 21.co, thinks it could be the high-profile NFTs such as CryptoPunks, as well as a Bored Ape and a couple of Mutant Apes.
However, they will not touch the Starry Night Capital fund, a collection of assets put together by pseudonymous collector Vincent Van Dough for 3AC’s Starry Night Capital. - they are subject to a claim in the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in the British Virgin Islands.
